Criterion’s Complete Kubrick Box Set Is Bringing the International Version of THE SHINING to U.S. Fans for the First Time
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantIf you’re a fan of Stanley Kubrick and physical media, Criterion Collection just gave collectors a very good reason to start making room on the shelf.
Criterion has officially announced The Complete Kubrick, an enormous 4K + Blu-ray box set that gathers every film Kubrick directed into one definitive collection. This thing comes packed with restored films, hours of bonus content, and some genuinely exciting surprises.
One of the biggest reveals involves The Shining, which won’t just include the version most audiences know. Criterion is also bringing Kubrick’s international cut of the horror classic to U.S. home video for the very first time.
Criterion describes the collection by saying: “Tracing his evolution from independent maverick to Hollywood rebel to visionary transnational auteur whose every film from the mid-1960s on became a manifesto of a radically new sensibility,” Criterion previews, “The Complete Kubrick brings together the entirety of a body of work that opened popular cinema up to new realms of moral profundity and metaphysical mystery.”
The company goes on to explain the scope of the release: “Collected for the first time are Kubrick’s thirteen features and three shorts, all restored in 4K, with their original soundtracks alongside the 5.1 mixes, restored and remastered; over twenty-five hours of interviews, documentaries, and behind-the-scenes materials; and deluxe packaging illustrated with rare photographs, artwork, and documents annotated by Kubrick himself, all housed in a singular box inspired by the director’s legendary archive.”
Horror fans are likely going to be especially interested in what’s included for The Shining. After the film opened in U.S. theaters in 1980, Kubrick made the unusual decision to significantly rework the movie for international audiences.
The version he prepared for release outside the United States runs 115 minutes, compared to the familiar 144-minute domestic cut. In total, Kubrick removed 29 minutes from the film, creating a noticeably leaner version of the story.
While international audiences have had access to this cut on home video for years, American fans have never been able to own it on U.S. home video. That changes with The Complete Kubrick, making this release a major event for collectors and Kubrick enthusiasts who have wanted to compare the two versions side by side.
The set also includes a brand-new 4K restoration of Vivian Kubrick’s acclaimed behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of The Shining. The documentary offers a fascinating look at the production of one of the most discussed horror films ever made and has long been essential viewing for fans of the movie.
Between all thirteen features, three early shorts, restored audio options, extensive bonus materials, and the long-awaited arrival of the international cut of The Shining in the United States, Criterion appears to be delivering the ultimate Stanley Kubrick collection.
The Complete Kubrick box set will be released on October 20, 2026.
