SICARIO 3 Is Happening With Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin Returning
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantEmily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin are heading back into the brutal world of Sicario, and I’m very surprised we’re actually getting this movie.
The three stars are set to reunite for Sicario 3, bringing the core cast of the original film back together for another trip into the franchise’s violent and morally murky world.
Black Label Media and Thunder Road are developing the sequel, with Padraic McKinley attached to direct from a script by Steven Knight.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, so there’s no word yet on what pulls Kate Macer, Alejandro Gillick, and Matt Graver back into each other’s orbit.
The Sicario franchise was created by Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the 2015 original. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the movie became a surprise hit thanks to its intense story, killer performances, and Villeneuve’s incredibly controlled direction. It also helped push Villeneuve into the top tier of Hollywood filmmakers.
The story continued in 2018 with Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which brought Del Toro and Brolin back as Alejandro and Graver. Blunt’s Kate Macer didn’t return for that film, which makes her involvement in the third installment particularly exciting.
According to Deadline, the popularity of the franchise has continued to grow in the years since Day of the Soldado. Blunt, Del Toro, and Brolin all read Knight’s latest draft of the screenplay and came aboard.
Finding the right filmmaker was the next major piece of the puzzle. Black Label Media and Thunder Road met with several potential directors, while the three stars also participated in meetings with candidates. McKinley ultimately impressed everyone involved and landed the job.
McKinley and Knight are currently working on the screenplay and incorporating notes from the cast. The plan is to begin production early next year.
There could also be a change on the distribution side. Lionsgate released the first two Sicario movies, but the producers reportedly plan to take Sicario 3 to the market, with several studios already interested in the project.
I honestly didn’t think we’d see Sicario 3 happen, especially with all three original stars returning. Getting Blunt, Del Toro, and Brolin back together is a big deal, and it immediately makes this sequel more interesting.
The first Sicario worked so well because these three characters brought completely different perspectives to the same ugly world. Putting those personalities together again gives the filmmakers plenty to work with.
If McKinley and Knight can capture what made the original movie so good while giving these characters a worthwhile reason to reunite, Sicario 3 could be something special. Either way, seeing this awesome cast together again is reason enough to be excited.
