Diego Luna Heads Into Disney’s Live-Action TANGLED in Mysterious New Role
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantDisney’s live-action remake train keeps rolling with Tangled, and this next stop is a fresh update has revealed that Diego Lunais officially joining the studio’s reimagining of its beloved 2010 animated hit.
The actor, who’s been a major part of the Star Wars universe lately, is sticking with Disney for another high-profile project, and fans are already trying to guess who he might be playing.
Details about Luna’s character are being kept under wraps for now. What we do know is that the film already has a solid lineup. Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim are set to take on the iconic roles of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider.
Flynn, of course, is the roguish thief who ends up helping Rapunzel break free from her tower-bound life. On the villain side, Kathryn Hahn will be stepping into the role of Mother Gothel, which feels like a perfect match.
The film is being directed by Michael Gracey, known for The Greatest Showman, and he’s working from a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor. Production is gearing up to begin in Spain this June, with Kristin Burr producing and Lucy Kitada executive producing.
The original Tangled, directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, brought a modern twist to the classic Rapunzel fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm.
It followed a spirited princess with magical golden hair who escapes her isolated tower and discovers the world for the first time. Along the way, she teams up with Flynn Rider and uncovers the truth about her past and the woman who raised her.
The film became a massive hit, pulling in over $590 million globally and earning an Oscar nomination for the song “I See the Light,” with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater.
As for Luna, he’s been staying busy. He recently starred in Andor, one of the most well-received Star Wars series to hit Disney+, and he’s also stepping into directing with Ashes (Ceniza en la boca), which is set to premiere at Cannes.
On top of that, he’s got Netflix’s México 86 arriving June 5, along with Eleven Days, a hostage thriller from Peter Landesman.
