Paramount Sets 2028 Release Dates for New SONIC Spinoff Movie and Sonic-Fied Live-Action TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Adventure
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantParamount is lining up a couple of years for fans of Sonic the Hedgehogand Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The studio has locked in release dates for two major projects that will expand both franchises in fresh ways.
Paramount has officially planted November 17, 2028 on the calendar for an untitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. This one is being developed as a “Sonic-fied” family friendly live action and CG animation hybrid that brings Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo back to the big screen.
This movie will mark the first live action outing for the turtle brothers since 2016’s underwhelming Out of the Shadows.
The new film is being produced by Neal H. Moritz, who helped steer Paramount’s massively successful Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy. The studio hasn’t released story details yet, but the hybrid format suggests they’re aiming for a lively modern spin on the heroes in a half shell while still appealing to younger audiences.
I don’t know anyone who is actually excited about this movie, especially since Paramount put the R-ratedThe Laat Ronin film project on the shelf.
This announcement arrives as Paramount continues expanding the TMNT universe. After turning to animation with 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the studio found solid success.
A sequel, Mutant Mayhem 2, is already slated to launch on September 17, 2027. The new live action hybrid project will follow a year later, marking a steady comeback for the franchise.
Fans of the blue blur also have something new speeding their way. Paramount has scheduled an untitled “Sonic Universe Event Film” for December 22, 2028. The studio hasn’t revealed what angle this new entry will take but it has confirmed that the project is separate from Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is planned for March 19, 2027.
What we do know is that Moritz is again involved on the Sonic side. With the first three movies surpassing a combined $1 billion worldwide, Paramount clearly sees tremendous value in expanding the Sonic universe.
Whether this event film brings in new characters, crossovers or a storyline that branches off from the main series, it is being positioned as something special.
Alongside the Sonic and TMNT announcements, Paramount revealed that Top Gun will return to theaters on May 13, 2026 for its 40th anniversary. The classic film directed by Tony Scott and starring Tom Cruise became the highest grossing movie of 1986 with $357.4 million.
The story follows Lt. Pete Maverick Mitchell, a skilled fighter pilot competing to become the best of the best. Cruise returned for 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, which skyrocketed to 1.49 billion dollars and stands as the biggest film in Paramount’s 113 year history.
More information will drop in the coming months.
