WEREWOLF BY NIGHT Star Gael García Bernal Urges MCU Fans to Push Marvel for a Sequel

Marvel’s monsters deserve another night out, and Gael García Bernal would very much like fans to help make that happen.

The actor, who played Jack Russell in Marvel Studios’ Werewolf By Night, is still hoping to return for another supernatural adventure in the MCU. More than that, he’s encouraging fans who loved the special to make some noise and remind Marvel that they want more.

During a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything session, Bernal was asked about his experience making the 2022 Marvel Studios Special Presentation. His response made it pretty clear that he isn’t ready to put Jack Russell away just yet.

“I urge you to do whatever you can, whatever is in your power, to push Marvel into some sense of responsibility and also of ambition.”

Bernal also revealed that Werewolf By Night was originally meant to be the beginning of something bigger. Marvel had plans to continue exploring Jack and this supernatural corner of the MCU, although those ideas have yet to materialize.

“It was for me a wonderful project to do; I loved doing it; I had so much fun experiencing that, and for me it was only a taste,” he added. “I wish I could do more; we had many plans. I hope they materialize one day!”

The special introduced Jack Russell alongside Elsa Bloodstone, Man-Thing, and several other monster hunters and creatures, giving Marvel a strange and wonderfully creepy playground that felt different from most of the MCU.

The ending also left plenty of room for another story, with Jack and Man-Thing together and seemingly ready for more adventures. Despite the positive reception and continued fan interest, Marvel Studios still hasn’t officially announced a sequel.

There is at least some reason for fans to keep hope alive. Earlier this year, director Michael Giacchino said he was still planning to make a Werewolf By Night sequel, even though getting it together has taken much longer than expected.

Since the original release, Marvel has kept the special around in other forms. The black-and-white presentation was later released in color on Disney+, while the documentary Director by Night gave viewers a look at Giacchino and the team making the project.

Bernal has stayed plenty busy in the meantime. His recent projects include La Máquina, The End of It, and Magellan, and he’ll next appear in Zero A.D.: The Birth of Christ later this year.

Werewolf by Night remains one of Marvel Studios’ more unusual MCU projects, and it opened a door to characters and stories that have barely been explored since. Bernal wants another shot at it. Giacchino wants another shot at it. Now they just need Marvel to turn the full moon back on.
