Elliot Page’s THE ODYSSEY Role Has Been Revealed and It Isn’t Achilles
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantThere’s been a lot of discussion and speculation about whoElliot Page is playing in The Odyssey, with many assuming the actor had landed the role of the legendary warrior Achilles. As it turns out, those theories missed the mark.
A newly updated listing for The Odyssey on Into Film has revealed that Page will actually portray Sinon, a Greek warrior whose actions helped bring about the fall of Troy through one of mythology's most famous acts of deception.
While Achilles is one of the central figures of the Trojan War, Sinon has a much different place in the story. His role isn't especially prominent in The Odyssey, which suggests Page's appearance in the film may be relatively brief. Even so, Sinon plays a crucial part in the larger mythology surrounding the war.
According to Virgil's Aeneid, Sinon was Odysseus' cousin. After the Greeks constructed the legendary Trojan Horse, they pretended to abandon the war and sail away.
Sinon remained behind and intentionally allowed himself to be captured by the Trojans. Claiming he had been deserted by his fellow Greeks, he earned their trust by spinning a convincing lie.
He told the Trojans that the massive wooden horse was a sacred offering to Athena and that bringing it inside the city walls would guarantee Troy's protection.
Believing his story, the Trojans welcomed the horse into the city. During the night, the Greek warriors hidden inside emerged, opened the gates for the returning Greek army, and Troy ultimately fell.
It's an interesting and crucial character to the paln, even if the part isn't expected to be a major one. Knowing Christopher Nolan, though, even a smaller role can leave a lasting impression when it's placed in the right moment of the story.
The Odyssey features a huge ensemble cast led by Matt Damon as Odysseus. Tom Holland plays his son, Telemachus, while Anne Hathaway takes on the role of Penelope.
Robert Pattinson portrays Antinous, and Lupita Nyong'o will pull double duty as both Helen of Troy and her sister, Clytemnestra. The cast also includes Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and several other high-profile actors.
Nolan wrote the screenplay and directed the epic adaptation, reuniting with composer Ludwig Göransson following their Academy Award-winning collaboration on Oppenheimer.
With the mystery surrounding Elliot Page's character finally solved, fans can stop guessing and start looking forward to seeing how Nolan brings Sinon's unforgettable deception to life when The Odyssey arrives in theaters on July 17.
