Elle Fanning and Julianne Moore to Star in Rebecca Miller’s MOONSONG: A LIFE IN SEVEN VERSES About GOODNIGHT MOON Author Margaret Wise Brown
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantSome of the most beloved children's books ever written are getting the big screen treatment in a fascinating new way. Elle Fanning and Julianne Moore have signed on to star in Moonsong: A Life In Seven Verses, the next feature from acclaimed filmmaker Rebecca Miller, which will tell the remarkable story of legendary children's author Margaret Wise Brown.
The project marks Miller's ninth feature as a director, and she's also writing the screenplay. Rather than simply celebrating Brown's literary success, the film looks set to explore the life of the woman whose imagination shaped childhood for generations of readers.
The movie is based on Leonard S. Marcus' biography Margaret Wise Brown: Awakened by the Moon, chronicling the life of one of the most influential children's authors ever.
Brown is best known for timeless classics like Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny, books that have remained bedtime staples and classroom favorites for decades.
Often referred to as "the laureate of the nursery," Brown's work has become part of childhood around the world. Her stories continue to connect with young readers long after their original publication, making her legacy as relevant today as it was during her lifetime.
The project found its way to Miller and her producing partner Damon Cardasis at Round Films through Amanda Goodwin, Keri Selig, and Sasha Alexander. Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese has also come aboard as executive producer. Production is currently scheduled to begin in Spring 2027.
Scorsese and Miller have already built a strong creative relationship. Miller recently directed the acclaimed five-part documentary Mr. Scorsese, which earned her the Directors Guild of America Award for Best Documentary. The series also picked up three Emmy nominations, including one recognizing her directing work.
Miller's career has been filled with critical acclaim. Along with her recent DGA win, she's received three Emmy nominations, won an Independent Spirit Award, and previously took home the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
Both stars attached to the project have plenty happening outside of Moonsong. Moore will next appear in Jesse Eisenberg's The Debut for A24 and recently wrapped production on Tom Ford's Cry To Heaven.
Fanning, meanwhile, is having an incredible run herself. She currently stars in and executive produces Margo's Got Money Troubles, a performance that earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Up next, she'll appear in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping before starring in and producing The Nightingale alongside her sister, Dakota Fanning. She's also currently filming A24's Discretion opposite Nicole Kidman.
With Rebecca Miller bringing Margaret Wise Brown's story to life, two outstanding actresses leading the cast, and Martin Scorsese lending his support as executive producer, Moonsong: A Life In Seven Verses has all the ingredients to become a compelling portrait of one of literature's most enduring creative voices.
