Jason Statham and David Ayer Reunite for Action-Thriller JOHN DOE Written by Zak Penn

If you’ve been keeping an eye on modern action cinema, you’ve probably noticed that Jason Stathamand David Ayer have found a groove together. After teaming up on The Beekeeper and A Working Man, the duo is jumping back into the fire with a new action-thriller titled John Doe, and this one sounds like it will lean hard into mystery, action, and high-stakes chaos.

Ayer is set to direct from a script written by Zak Penn, whose resume includes massive crowd-pleasers like Ready Player One and The Avengers. That alone should give you a sense of the scale and pacing this project is aiming for.

Statham will step into the role of a man who quite literally has nothing to hold onto. The story follows a character with no memory, no past, and not even a name.

The only thing anchoring him is the image of a woman named Eliza. As pieces of his identity slowly come back into focus, he realizes he was trained for a mission that never stopped moving forward.

Now the same people who put him on that path are hunting him down. With danger closing in, he’s forced to decide whether to complete the mission or hold onto the one thing that makes him feel human: love.

The film is being produced and financed by Miramax, with Statham also producing under Punch Palace Productions. Penn and Paul Schiff are on board as producers as well.

Black Bear is handling international sales and will be presenting the project to buyers at the Cannes market, where it’s expected to draw serious attention. Production is currently targeting a September 2026 start.

There’s good reason for the confidence here. The Beekeeper pulled in $163 million worldwide, while A Working Man followed with a solid $89 million haul. That kind of track record makes John Doe an easy sell, especially with a built-in audience that shows up for Statham’s brand of action.

Statham himself remains one of the most reliable names in the genre. His films have collectively brought in over $8.5 billion globally, and he’s not slowing down. He’s got multiple projects lined up, including Viva La Madness with Guy Ritchie, as well as the meta-action comedy Jason Statham Stole My Bike from David Leitch. On top of that, he’s returning for The Beekeeper 2.

Ayer, meanwhile, continues to stay busy across film and television. Known for other projects like Suicide Squad, and Fury, he’s also developing the action-adventure Heart of the Beast with Brad Pitt and J.K. Simmons, and working on the series American Blue for HBO Max and WBTV.

As for Penn, beyond The Avengers and Ready Player One, he also worked on Free Guy, The Incredible Hulk, X2: X-Men United, and X-Men: The Last Stand, among others. He knows how to build large-scale stories that still keep audiences locked in.

Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman shared his excitement for the project, saying, “We’re thrilled to be reuniting Jason and David on John Doe, powered by Zak Penn’s sharp, propulsive script. With wildly inventive action and modern themes that will resonate with a global audience, this takes the Statham/Ayer collaboration to a new level.”

Black Bear’s John Friedberg added, “Jason is a singular talent in the action genre who consistently delivers for his audience. David has also firmly established himself as one of the top action directors working today. Their previous collaborations rank among the most successful independent action movies in recent years, and we are thrilled to deliver their third movie together in John Doe.”

Everything about John Doe points to a slick, intense ride with a character-driven core. If Ayer and Statham keep building on what they’ve already done together, this could easily be another fun collaboration.
