Review: THE SHEEP DETECTIVES Is a Warm and Witty Movie For Fans of All Ages

by · GeekTyrant

I got the chance to see an early screening of The Sheep Detectives with my family over the weekend, and this movie went above and beyond my expectations. I expected to enjoy this movie, as its cast alone was alluring, and it features a murder mystery and talking animals, but there was such a solid story behind the setup, I was truly impressed.

Hugh Jackman stars as a shepherd named George who takes very good care of his flock, feeding them, caring for their ailments, and reading them murder mystery novels each evening. This proves to be helpful when George turns up dead, and the town is unsure where to start with a crime so horrendous.

There is plenty of slapstick comedy one would expect from a movie with talking sheep, but it was the moral and the life lessons I got from the animals that I wasn’t expecting.

In the film, we learn early on that the animals are quick to use their power of forgetfulness when they are faced with emotions that are tough to handle, but it’s in the reflection where they learn and teach the audience what it means to remember the times in our lives that we yearn for or learn from, and that’s where the growth happens.

This movie was so touching. I laughed and cried along with my family, and it was a great day at the movies. I loved seeing an original film again, as opposed to a sequel or remake, and this story, based on the novel “Three Bags Full,” by Leonie Swann, was such a treat.

The Sheep Detectives hits theatres nationwide this weekend, on May 8th, just in time for Mother’s Day, so head to the movies and enjoy.
