Matt Reeves’ New TV Deal Opens the Door for More Stories From THE BATMAN’s Gotham

Matt Reeves’ Gotham may be getting ready to expand again.

Matt Reeves has renewed his overall television deal with Warner Bros. Television through his 6th & Idaho production company, giving the filmmaker and his team more opportunities to develop new series for the studio.

While nothing Batman-related has officially been announced as part of the agreement, it certainly makes another trip into Robert Pattinson’s Gotham feel more likely.

Reeves established this version of the Dark Knight with The Batman in March 2022, putting a detective-heavy spin on Bruce Wayne with Pattinson under the cowl. The movie earned $772.3 million worldwide and received strong reviews, giving Warner Bros. plenty of reason to keep exploring the world Reeves created.

That expansion eventually gave us The Penguin, the awesome HBO limited series starring Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb. The show premiered in September 2024 and proved that Reeves’ Gotham could work just as well on television without Batman being the center of the story.

Now Warner Bros. Television wants to continue working with Reeves on new shows for the studio. Warner Bros. TV Group chairman Channing Dungey praised Reeves and his team while discussing the renewed partnership.

“Matt has a true knack for getting into the psyche of his characters. He and his team have delivered some of the most compelling, thought-provoking stories over the years.”

The deal comes as Warner Bros. Discovery faces an uncertain corporate future, with a potential Paramount Skydance acquisition still lacking a finalized timeline. Whatever happens on that front, Warner Bros. Television clearly wants Reeves in its creative lineup.

The interesting question for Batman fans is whether this could lead to another series set within Reeves’ Gotham.

The Penguin offers a pretty great blueprint for how that could work. Reeves served as an executive producer, while Lauren LeFranc wrote and ran the series and Craig Zobel directed. Reeves was able to help guide the larger universe without having to personally make every episode.

That approach becomes especially useful when you consider how much time exists between these movies. The Penguin helped bridge the lengthy gap following The Batman, whileThe Batman: Part IIisn’t arriving until February 2028.

Reeves has plans for a trilogy starring Pattinson, and these films take a long time to write and produce. Television could keep Gotham active between theatrical installments without rushing the movies.

There are already several abandoned ideas that could potentially be revisited in some form. A Gotham City Police Department series was announced back in 2020 before the project stalled.

It eventually transformed into an Arkham Asylum concept focused on Gotham’s villains, but that version was shelved as well. James Gunn later explained that the Arkham project had moved into his separate DC Universe continuity rather than Reeves’ Batman universe, although the DCU version ultimately didn’t move forward either.

Those concepts may be dead, but the ideas behind them certainly don’t have to be. The Batman: Part II could also introduce characters capable of carrying their own shows.

Set photos and leaks have pointed toward the Court of Owls potentially having a role in the sequel, which would open up a very different side of Gotham centered on the secret organization and its influence over the city.

There are just so many directions another Batman TV spinoff could potentially go. Oz Cobb wasn’t the obvious choice for a prestige crime series when The Batman first arrived, yet The Penguin turned him into the centerpiece of one of the strongest projects to come out of Reeves’ Gotham.

A Court of Owls thriller, a Harvey Dent crime drama, an Arkham-focused series, or something completely unexpected could all fit the same model.

Of course, Reeves’ new Warner Bros. Television deal isn’t specifically a Batman agreement. 6th & Idaho can develop other shows, and there’s no guarantee that another Gotham spinoff will happen.

Still, Warner Bros. has already seen what Reeves’ Batman universe can deliver on television. With The Penguin proving the concept, The Batman: Part II introducing another chapter of Gotham, and Reeves now extending his relationship with the studio, the pieces are certainly there for another series.

The Batman: Part II is scheduled to hit theaters on February 18, 2028.
