THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU Hints Grogu’s Future Could Be Tied Rotta The Hutt
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantThe Mandalorian and Grogu ended up being an awesome film that I really enjoyed, but one of the big things it drove hom was the fact that Din Djarin and Grogu were never meant to walk the same path forever.
The movie plants that idea throughout the story, especially during a stretch in the second half when Din becomes deathly ill from poisoning following a confrontation with a giant creature thanks to the Hutt Twins.
With Mando barely hanging on, Grogu is suddenly forced into survival mode. He builds a mud shelter to protect Din, scavenges for food and water, and does everything he can to keep his father figure alive.
Even with all the progress Grogu has made with the Force, there’s a point where he realizes his abilities might not be enough. A local eventually gives him medicine that could save Din, but the film makes it clear Grogu understands he may have to face life without him.
That emotional thread runs through the entire movie. Grogu ages differently than Din and time is simply not on their side.
The film keeps reminding audiences that Grogu could live for centuries after Din Djarin is gone. But what makes it even more interesting is the possibility that Lucasfilm may already be teasing who Grogu’s future companion could be with Rotta the Hutt.
The movie also makes sure to point out that the Hutts also have incredibly long lifespans, putting Rotta and Grogu on a similar timeline in the Star Wars universe.
Over the course of the story, Rotta bonds with Grogu in a way that feels very intentional, it seems to me like Jon Favreau is planting seeds for something much bigger years down the road for these characters.
By the end of the movie, Rotta decides to align himself with the New Republic, and with the rise of the First Order still decades away, it certainly feels possible that Grogu and Rotta could reconnect later in the timeline for an entirely different kind of adventure. One without Din Djarin.
The idea of Grogu and Rotta teaming up years later when Grogu is fully in his prime as a Force-using Mandalorian sounds awesome! I love the thought of these character reuniting at some point for a wild journey.
Favreau recently confirmed that Grogu’s future is something he’s thought about extensively: "Creatively, I have a lot of plans, and I have a lot of thoughts about these characters, especially for Grogu. Grogu is a character that is – his species lives for centuries. He's on a path to be both a Jedi and a Mandalorian.
“He's making certain choices and decisions, and he has a great teacher now. And so, as he develops and grows, there's opportunities for stories that would emanate from that."
Favreau went on to explain how unique Grogu’s training has been compared to traditional Jedi: "He's not on the typical Jedi path of a youngling, but he has trained with some of the best Jedi teachers that there are. We know for sure he's studied with Luke Skywalker.
“There's implications that he may have crossed paths with Yoda, because he does recognize the name, is what we imply. And he also was there at the Jedi Temple before Order 66."
He also talked about how Grogu’s connection to the Force continues evolving even outside formal Jedi teachings:
"So, it's a big part in talking to Dave Filoni, and by extension, to what he learned from George [Lucas], which is that the Force is about training. It's about refining, just like an athletic ability or any skill.
“And we do see that, although Grogu is not serving under somebody who is teaching him, he still clearly is meditating and going through some version of the Jedi discipline. So, I think that his Force use has definitely leveled up a bit."
That’s what makes Grogu such a fascinating character. He doesn’t fit neatly into the Jedi mold, and he’s not fully Mandalorian either. He’s becoming something entirely new in Star Wars, and The Mandalorian and Grogu feels like the beginning of a much larger story for him and Rotta.
Din Djarin may always be the heart of Grogu’s journey, but this movie definitely hints that he won’t be the only important figure in it forever.
