Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch Rumored To Have A Surprising Role In Marvel's Mutant Saga
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantA new Marvel rumor is making the rounds, and if it turns out to be true, Elizabeth Olsen could be stepping back into the MCU in a much bigger way than fans expected.
Scarlet Witch has been at the center of plenty of speculation since the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but this latest claim suggests Wanda Maximoff's story might only be getting started.
According to insider @MyTimeToShineH, Marvel Studios reportedly has major plans for Wanda as the MCU moves deeper into the Mutant Saga. The scooper claims, "Not only will Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff return, but she's also set to be one of the main leads - and villains - of the Mutant Saga."
As always, rumors like this should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism. Marvel Studios hasn't officially confirmed Olsen's return, much less revealed what Wanda's future looks like. Even so, the idea lines up with several fan theories that have been floating around as anticipation builds forAvengers: Doomsday.
One of the more popular theories is that Wanda could return as one of Doctor Doom's allies. There have already been several rumors pointing toward a version of Scarlet Witch working alongside the iconic villain, and there's comic book history that could support that direction.
In The Children's Crusade, Doom manipulates Wanda following the devastating events of House of M, hoping to gain control of her reality-warping abilities.
Considering everything Wanda has endured in the MCU, from WandaVision to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she'd be an easy target for someone like Doom.
She's grieving, carrying tremendous guilt, possesses unimaginable power, and is currently missing after the collapse of Mount Wundagore, with most of the world assuming she's dead.
It would also give Marvel an opportunity to reintroduce Olsen in a meaningful way while establishing Doom as a dangerous force capable of manipulating one of the MCU's most powerful characters.
Where things get even more interesting is what this rumor suggests beyond Avengers: Doomsday. If Wanda becomes one of the central figures of the Mutant Saga, Marvel could finally lean into one of the biggest pieces of her comic book history.
The MCU has never officially identified Wanda as a mutant, but many fans believe that's only a matter of time now that Marvel is preparing to fully embrace the X-Men. If that happens, there are several famous storylines the studio could pull from.
The biggest one is, of course, House of M. Wanda's infamous declaration of "No More Mutants" reshaped the Marvel Universe and made her one of the most hated figures in mutant history. Seeing Marvel adapt even part of that storyline into live action would make for an absolutely wild event film.
There's also Avengers Disassembled, where Wanda's mental collapse tears the Avengers apart from within. Marvel could even borrow ideas from Avengers vs. X-Men by placing Wanda at the heart of the conflict, potentially giving her a role similar to Hope Summers as the catalyst that brings Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the X-Men into direct conflict.
Whether Marvel follows any of those stories remains to be seen, but Wanda's comic history certainly offers plenty of material for the studio to explore.
Olsen has also made it clear that she'd gladly return, as long as the story makes sense, saying: "It's a character I love going back to when there's a way to use her well, and I think I've been lucky when I started, I was used well...and they kind of didn't know what to do with me for a second there! If there's a good way to use her, I'm always happy to come back."
For now, fans will have to wait and see whether any of these rumors become reality. Scarlet Witch remains one of the MCU's most interesting characters, and if Marvel really is positioning her as both a leading hero and a major antagonist during the Mutant Saga, it could set the stage for one of the franchise's biggest and most emotionally charged stories yet.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
