SLAYGROUND Trailer Teases a Bloody Haunted Attraction Massacre From GREEN ROOM Director Jeremy Saulnier

Halloween attractions are supposed to scare the hell out of you, but things get a whole lot worse in Jeremy Saulnier’s upcoming thriller Slayground. The filmmaker behind Green Room and Rebel Ridge is back with another nasty-looking thriller, and judging by the first trailer, this could be another great addition to his filmography.

Previously titled October, the film has officially been renamed Slayground, and A24 has released the first trailer along with new details about the story. The movie takes place around Halloween, with a horrifying incident at a haunted attraction kicking off a deadly mystery.

The story begins on October 24, when a mass casualty event leaves several people dead inside a haunted attraction. At the center of it all is a scare actor named Metal Mike Graves, who wakes up surrounded by the bodies of his fellow employees with absolutely no idea what happened.

Here's the official synopsis: “Scare-actor ‘Metal Mike’ Graves wakes up in a haunted attraction surrounded by the dead bodies of his co-workers with no memory of how they got there. As a state-wide manhunt closes in, he races to uncover the truth – even if the trail leads straight back to him.”

That's a pretty interesting story for a Halloween horror thriller, especially with Saulnier calling the shots. I like the idea of a guy waking up in the middle of a massacre, unable to remember whether he had anything to do with it, makes for an interesting mystery. Throw in a statewide manhunt, and you've got a potentially brutal game of survival.

I'm a big fan of Saulnier's work, particularly Green Room, and this looks like exactly the kind of movie I enjoy seeing him make. He has a knack for putting characters into absolutely horrible situations and making the danger feel painfully real. I'm curious to see how he handles the Halloween setting, especially with a story that begins inside a haunted attraction.

The film also has a great ensemble cast that includes Cory Michael Smith, Chase Sui Wonders, Sophie Wilde, James Badge Dale, Stanley Simons, Stephen Root, Chris Sullivan, Young Mazino, Imogen Poots, Matty Matheson, and Macon Blair.

Adding to the movie's appeal is a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, whose music should be a great fit for the film's dark atmosphere and escalating tension.

Saulnier wrote and directed Slayground, with A24 producing and distributing the film. Between the haunted attraction massacre, the fugitive storyline, and the mystery surrounding Metal Mike, there's plenty here to get excited about.

This looks like a great Halloween movie, even if we'll have to wait until after the holiday to see it. I'm already sold on the premise, and with Saulnier involved, I'm hoping for something intense, violent, and packed with surprises.

Slayground hits theaters on January 29, 2027.
