SCREAM 8 Could Be Getting a Bloody New Vision From AMERICAN MARY’s Soska Sisters

Ghostface may have found the filmmakers responsible for his next killing spree, and if the latest rumors are pointing in the right direction, Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska could be stepping into the director’s chair for Scream 8.

The twin filmmaking duo, known to horror fans as the Soska Sisters or the Twisted Twins, have responded to reports linking them to the next chapter of the Scream franchise. They didn't confirm anything, but their response certainly gives fans something to chew on while we wait for an official announcement.

The speculation kicked off on August 8 when a horror fan posted on X: "Spyglass is reportedly closing negotiations with the Soska Sisters (Jen and Sylvia) to take over directing the next installment in the Scream horror franchise. The 'Twisted Twins' are said to have met secretly with studio executives this week."

Three days later, Jen and Sylvia responded to the post with a simple eyes emoji. That's obviously not confirmation that they've landed the gig, but it's exactly the kind of response that's going to get horror fans wondering whether the sisters know something they can't talk about yet.

Paramount confirmed earlier this year that Scream 8 had entered development, with Poker Face writers Lilla Zuckerman and Nora Zuckerman hired to write the screenplay.

There has been a major question hanging over who would direct the movie, though. Original Scream screenwriter and Scream 7 director Kevin Williamson isn't expected to return for the next installment, leaving the franchise looking for someone new to take Ghostface out for another bloody night on the town.

Neither Paramount nor Spyglass has commented on the Soska Sisters rumor, so for now, this remains firmly in the speculation category. Still, there are definitely fans who would love to see it happen.

One fan responded: "If this happens, this will be the first time in years I'm excited for a Scream sequel!" Another offered an equally enthusiastic endorsement: "If you two are part of it then I know it will be worth seeing."

The Soskas could certainly bring an interesting flavor to Scream 8. They're best known for their gory 2013 horror film American Mary, and their willingness to get nasty with horror could make for a fun pairing with Ghostface. If they actually have met with Spyglass about the project, it's easy to see why their names would be in the conversation.

They'd also be joining a franchise with an impressive history of filmmakers calling the shots. Wes Craven defined Scream and directed the first four movies, while Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, the filmmaking duo behind Ready or Not, helped introduce a new generation of characters and killers with the fifth and sixth installments.

Whoever directs Scream 8 also has a pretty big target to hit after the performance of Scream 7. The most recent movie exceeded expectations at the box office and became the highest-grossing installment in the franchise, bringing in more than $220 million worldwide during its theatrical run.

The bigger mystery is what the next movie will actually be about. Scream 7 leaned heavily into the franchise's legacy characters, but Scream 8 doesn't necessarily have to follow the same path.

The filmmakers could introduce another group of unsuspecting victims, similar to the approach taken with Scream 5, or the story could continue with Scream 7 final girl Tatum Evans, the daughter of Sidney Prescott.

Then again, trying to predict where a Scream movie is headed before Ghostface starts making phone calls is half the fun.

The Soska Sisters would be an intriguing choice for the franchise, especially if Paramount and Spyglass want Scream 8 to push harder into bloody, aggressive horror territory. Their reaction to the rumor isn't enough to start engraving their names on the director's chairs just yet, but they certainly didn't shut the story down.
