Jennifer Lawrence Reunites With NO HARD FEELINGS Director Gene Stupnitsky for Apple Rom-Com ONE MONTH MARK
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantJennifer Lawrence is getting back into the rom-com game, and she’s bringing along the director who helped make No Hard Feelings such a fun ride.
Jennifer Lawrence is set to star in and produce Apple Original Films’ contemporary romantic comedy One Month Mark, with Gene Stupnitsky in final negotiations to direct. The project reunites the pair following their work together on No Hard Feelings, and Lawrence reportedly pushed for Stupnitsky to take the job.
The movie comes with a simple hook that could make for a very entertaining relationship comedy: “She has never made it past a month in a relationship. He has never gone longer than a month without one.”
That’s an interesting foundation for two people who clearly have very different problems when it comes to dating.
Sophie Fleur de Bruijn wrote the screenplay, which became one of the hottest comedy specs in Hollywood after Chernin Entertainment landed it following a major auction over the summer.
More than 40 producers reportedly showed interest in One Month Mark, ranging from major production companies with studio deals to independent financiers and genre companies looking to jump into the romantic comedy space.
Studios and streaming services also made unsolicited offers, while several prominent actors and filmmakers pursued meetings with the producers.
Lawrence eventually emerged as the choice to lead the film, with Apple joining the package soon afterward. Finding the director involved another extensive search, but Lawrence wanted to work with Stupnitsky again after their experience making No Hard Feelings.
The two had already been looking for another project to tackle together, and Lawrence believed One Month Mark was the right match.
With Stupnitsky now nearing a deal, attention turns to casting Lawrence’s male co-star. Considering how much interest the screenplay has already generated around Hollywood, that role will likely have plenty of actors looking for a shot.
Stupnitsky has built a strong comedy résumé over the past several years. He directed Good Boys for Universal in 2019, co-created the Emmy-nominated Jury Duty and co-wrote films including Bad Teacher. He’s also currently producing Sony’s upcoming comedy Narcs.
There’s still no word on who will play opposite Lawrence, but that casting should be an interesting one to watch. No Hard Feelings gave Lawrence plenty of room to lean into her comedic side, and pairing her with Stupnitsky again on a relationship comedy feels like a natural next move.
