Jon Favreau Talks About the Great Supporting Cast of THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU

by · GeekTyrant

When it comes to The Mandalorian and Grogu, the story and action are only part of what’s grabbing attention. The cast thatJon Favreau has assembled is pretty interesting. You’ve got legendary actors, an iconic filmmaker stepping into voice acting, and a rising star playing a deep-cut Star Wars character that most fans didn’t expect to see again.

One of the standout additions is Sigourney Weaver, who steps into the role of Colonel Ward. But what makes her involvement even better is how naturally she connected with Grogu while filming. Favreau shared a great moment that ended up shaping part of the movie:

“Sigourney got such a kick out of Grogu… That was one of her notes… ‘I want to work with this guy.’ So, we created some moments that I think work very well.”

Grogu has a way of stealing scenes without saying a word, and it sounds like Weaver leaned right into that energy. It also hints that her character won’t just be passing through the story. There’s going to be some fun character interplay there.

Then there’s Martin Scorsese, which still sounds surreal to say in a Star Wars context. The legendary director lends his voice to a character named Hugo, an Ardennian fry cook. Favreau talke about getting to work with him again, saying:

“I'm such a fan. I was lucky enough to work on his film but I grew up watching his films.”

What makes this even cooler is how the animation team responded to Scorsese’s performance. Instead of just plugging his voice into a pre-designed character, they built the animation around what he brought to the role. That kind of creative collaboration usually leads to something memorable, especially with a personality like Scorsese in the mix.

And then you’ve got Jeremy Allen White, who takes on the role of Rotta the Hutt. Not the tiny Huttlet from The Clone Wars, but a grown-up, fully realized version of Jabba’s son. It’s the kind of deep-cut character pull that fans love, and apparently even the announcement had people questioning if it was real:

“When people first heard about it, they thought it was a false rumor that we planted.”

Rotta’s inclusion opens up some interesting storytelling territory. Star Wars has always played with family legacies, and bringing in Jabba’s son as an adult adds a new angle to that idea. It also gives White a chance to do something completely different, which makes this casting choice even more interesting.

Looking at the full picture, this cast doesn’t follow a predictable formula. It mixes Hollywood veterans, unexpected cameos, and rising talent in a way that feels fresh without losing that Star Wars identity.

Between Weaver sharing scenes with Grogu, Scorsese jumping into voice work, and White stepping into the role of a Hutt with something to prove, The Mandalorian and Grogu is sure to have some fun personality.
