Sarah Michelle Gellar Set To Play The Grim Reaper in Radio Silence’s Supernatural Romance THUD

Sarah Michelle Gellar is stepping into a role that sounds like a perfect mix of dark fantasy, romance, and chaos. According to Deadline, the actress has signed on to star as the Grim Reaper in the upcoming supernatural romance Thud, a new feature being produced by the filmmaking team known as Radio Silence.

Joining her is Rudy Pankow (Outer Banks), who will play none other than the Devil himself. The film is based on an original screenplay by Noga Pnueli (Meet Cute), and Thud puts a supernatural spin on the classic romantic comedy setup.

Thud watches “as the Grim Reaper and the Devil meet cute at a three-day destination wedding, falling in love after colliding at the event, where they’ve each come to sow their own chaos.”

That’s a wonderfully fun concept. A destination wedding is already a recipe for drama, but throwing Death and the Devil into the mix takes things to a whole different level.

The idea of these two cosmic forces finding romance while simultaneously creating mayhem sounds like it could lead to some fun, unpredictable storytelling.

The film will be directed by Mali Elfman, whose previous work includes the supernatural road-trip drama Next Exit. Elfman has also built an impressive résumé as a producer, working on genre projects such as Queens of the Dead, Haunting of Queen Mary, and Birth/Rebirth. Horror fans may also recognize her animated short The Scariest Skeleton.

Elfman also happens to be the daughter of legendary composer and musician Danny Elfman, whose iconic music has helped define countless genre films over the years.

On the production side, Thud reunites Gellar with Radio Silence following their collaboration on Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. The production company’s Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin are producing the project, bringing along the same creative energy that has made them such a major force in modern horror and genre filmmaking.

Deadline also reports that the film is set to shoot in Los Angeles. Between Sarah Michelle Gellar playing the Grim Reaper, Rudy Pankow portraying the Devil, and Radio Silence helping guide the project, Thud already sounds like one of the more original genre movies currently in development.

A love story between Death and the Devil at a wedding where both are trying to stir up trouble is exactly the kind of strange and entertaining setup that makes it hard not to be curious about what comes next.
