FLAPJAX Teaser Trailer Mixes Gnarly Body Horror with Twisted Nickelodeon Nostalgia

Fast food probably shouldn’t melt your flesh, but that’s apparently part of the experience at Hamudders.

The first teaser for Flapjax has arrived, offering a wonderfully gross mix of sci-fi horror, fast-food insanity, and the colorful energy of old-school Nickelodeon, making this strange little movie look like a seriously fun piece of genre madness.

Flapjax comes from director Rocko Zevenbergen and the story centers on an aggressively upbeat fast-food manager who gets the job of bringing back a long-forgotten menu item called Flapjax.

Mysterious warnings and disappearing people would probably convince most employees to stop the relaunch, but this guy is determined to put Flapjax back on the menu regardless of how weird and dangerous things get.

The teaser introduces the food itself, which looks less than appetizing despite proving strangely addictive. Then come the flesh-melting side effects.

Zevenbergen co-wrote the screenplay with Estevan Muñoz, who also appears in the film. The project has been cooking for more than six years, and Zevenbergen previously talked about finally getting this wonderfully bizarre creation in front of an audience:

“‘Flapjax’ has been in the works for over six years now. It is such a thrill to finally unleash our micro-epic ‘onto the menu,’ as it were.

“Audiences can expect a rollercoaster ride through cinematic styles; moments inspired by Ozu and Cronenberg blend in a style I believe is unique to our picture.

“I’m hopeful festival audiences will be swept away by our incredible cast, led by Gabriel Cagan, into the world of Hamudders, alien conspiracies, and …mommy issues!?”

That combination of cinematic influences certainly makes Flapjax an oddball proposition. Mixing Cronenberg-inspired horror with Ozu, alien conspiracies, fast-food culture, campy comedy, and Nickelodeon-style nostalgia sounds like the recipe for something gloriously unhinged.

Flapjax will make its world premiere when Fantastic Fest kicks off next week, which runs September 17 through September 24 in Austin, Texas.
