Plot Details Revealed for 23 YEARS LATER Trilogy; Two Films Have Already Been Shot

28 Years Laterstar Ralph Fiennes recently offered up some new details regarding the trilogy of films being developed by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland.

During a recent interview with IndieWire, Fiennes confirmed: “It’s three films,” and then revealed, “of which two have been shot.”

As for the any plot details, the actor went on to say: “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities.

“And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected.

“But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd, but actually is a force for good.”

It was also revealed that the sequel is titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, which Nia DaCosta was in talks to direct earlier this year, with a script by Garland. There’s no word on if she ended up directing it or not. I assume she did, though.

Cillian Murphy reprises his role in 28 Years Later as Jim, a former bicycle courier who previously woke from a coma to find the ‘Rage Virus’ has decimated London. He also serves as an executive producer.

The upcoming sequel also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman and Edvin Ryding.

Garland previously offered some insight on the theme of the film. He shared: “It’s to do with the passage of time, and thinking about what effect the passage of time would have.”

He added: “Is it what you would traditionally call a post-apocalyptic state? Or has something else begun to manifest? Time is really at the core of the engine of the film.”

When previously teasing the third movie, Garland said: "I have got a really cool idea for it, but it's a much bigger movie, and one of the things about 28 Days Later is that it was small and punk and this idea is less small and punk.”

The film stars Jodie Comer, Cillian Murphy, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, and Ralph Fiennes . The Marvels director Nia DaCosta is in talks to helm the second movie.

28 Years Later arrives in theaters on June 20, 2025 from Sony. It was previously reported that the film was shot using an iPhone 15 Pro.
