Paramount Developing CYBERPUNK 2077 Movie With TRANSFORMERS Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantNight City is headed to the big screen! Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action movie based on CD Projekt Red’s hit video game Cyberpunk 2077, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached to produce.
The studio is teaming up with CD Projekt Red, the acclaimed Polish video game developer and rights holder behind the franchise, to bring the futuristic world of Cyberpunk 2077 to life.
Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in Night City, a massive, crime-ridden metropolis in a dystopian version of California where powerful corporations run just about everything and cybernetic enhancements are part of everyday life.
The story follows V, a mercenary who ends up with a cybernetic biochip containing the digital consciousness of Johnny Silverhand, a legendary rocker and terrorist.
The problem is that Silverhand’s personality begins taking over V’s mind, threatening to erase their identity completely. The two are forced to work together to find a way to separate their consciousnesses and save V’s life, eventually putting them on a collision course with the Arasaka Corporation, one of the most powerful corporations in Night City.
There really is a ton of great material here for a movie, from the futuristic technology and brutal action to the interesting characters and corporate corruption. Night City itself could be an incredible setting for a big-budget sci-fi film. It should be a fun sandbox to play in.
The game has also been a massive success for CD Projekt Red, selling more than 40 million copies worldwide. Its expansion, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, has sold an additional 15 million copies.
Paramount has been making a serious push into video game adaptations lately, and Cyberpunk 2077 joins a growing lineup of projects based on popular gaming franchises.
The studio is also co-producing a live-action Street Fighter movie with Legendary Pictures, which is scheduled to hit theaters on October 16.
There's also a Call of Duty movie in development, with Peter Berg attached to direct and co-write the screenplay alongside Taylor Sheridan.
As for Cyberpunk 2077, there’s no word yet on who will write or direct the film, and no cast members have been announced.
It’s also unclear whether the movie will adapt V and Johnny Silverhand’s story directly or tell an original story set in Night City. Given how much material there is to explore in this universe, either approach could work.
The big question is whether Paramount can capture what makes the game so awesome. The world, characters, action, and technology offer plenty of cinematic possibilities, but the story and its characters are what will ultimately make the movie worth watching.
I’m excited to see what comes of this one. A properly executed Cyberpunk 2077 movie could be one hell of a sci-fi action experience. Hopefully, they manage to bring together a strong and talented creative team.
