Tim Robbins and Giancarlo Esposito Join Wyatt Russell’s MONSTERVERSE Series at Apple TV
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantApple TV’s Monsterverse is bringing in some serious acting talent! Tim Robbins (Silo, The Shawshank Redemption) and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Westworld) have joined the upcoming Monarch: Legacy of Monsters spinoff starring Wyatt Russell, and it sounds like this new chapter of Legendary’s monster franchise has plenty of trouble waiting for its characters.
Russell will reprise his role as a younger Colonel Lee Shaw, taking the character into the middle of the Cold War for a dangerous mission involving Soviet forces and a potentially catastrophic Titan.
The story takes place in 1984, with Shaw working as an American operative sent behind enemy lines to prevent the Soviets from unleashing a massive new Titan capable of destroying the United States and changing the course of the Cold War.
Mixing Cold War espionage with giant monsters opens the door for a different kind of adventure, one where secret military operations and international tensions collide with creatures that could wipe entire cities off the map.
Robbins and Esposito are set to guest star, although details about their characters haven't been revealed. Both actors are fantastic additions to the cast, especially Esposito, who has made a career out of playing intimidating characters who know how to command a room.
The previously announced cast includes Millie Brady, Pilou Asbaek, Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson, Nyasha Hatendi, Connie Nielsen, and Stana Katic.
Joby Harold serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures. Russell also executive produces. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produce for Toho Co., Ltd., which owns the Godzilla character.
Legendary has been steadily expanding its Monsterverse since Godzilla kicked things off in 2014. The franchise continued with Kong: Skull Island in 2017, Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019, Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The next big-screen installment, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is scheduled to hit theaters in 2027.
What makes this Lee Shaw series interesting is its opportunity to explore an earlier period in Monsterverse history. Rather than focusing entirely on massive monster battles, the story can dig into the human side of a world where governments are discovering just how dangerous these creatures really are.
