Mason Thames Confirmed as Nightwing in DC’s DYNAMIC DUO, Actor Breaks Silence

Mason Thames is officially stepping into the role of Dick Grayson, and he already seems pretty damn excited about becoming Nightwing.

Shortly after reports confirmed Thames will voice Grayson in DC Studios’ animated Dynamic Duo, the actor acknowledged the news on Instagram with a Story showing off a box loaded with Nightwing comics and DC merchandise.

No lengthy announcement was necessary. The photo made it pretty clear that Thames is ready to dive into the character.

Thames, best known for The Black Phone, will star opposite Logan Kim, who voices Jason Todd. The movie takes a different approach to two of Batman’s most famous protégés, following Grayson and Todd during their younger years as street kids calling themselves the Dynamic Duo.

Arthur Mintz is directing the movie, with his New Orleans-based animation studio Swaybox producing. Matthew Aldrich wrote the screenplay for the 6th & Idaho production.

The voice cast also includes Lee Pace as Red Hood One and Steve Buscemi as Red Hood Two. The InSneider initially revealed the full cast lineup before Deadline confirmed the major casting and production details.

Dynamic Duo is also an important project for DC’s animation plans. It marks the first collaboration between DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation under Bill Damaschke.

Fans will have to wait a little longer to see it, though. Warner Bros. moved the Dynamic Duo release date from June 30, 2028, to September 22, 2028. The studio views September as a strong back-to-school window that could appeal to younger viewers and college audiences.

The date change also gives Dynamic Duo some breathing room from Paramount’s Call of Duty adaptation, which had been scheduled for the same June 30 release date.

The film will be brought to life by Swaybox, the New Orleans-based creative team led by Arthur Mintz and Theresa Andersson, who are known for their groundbreaking practical puppetry work. Mintz is set to direct, with Reeves and Gunn producing.

Swaybox talked about their creative process, saying, “We’re bringing the magic of practical puppetry to the big screen in ways never before seen. Since 2014, Swaybox principals Arthur Mintz, Theresa Andersson, Noah Scruggs, Chris Armand, and Thomas Woodruff have pioneered new methods that challenge viewers’ notions of how puppets look, move, and feel.

“The result is long-form storytelling that is visually breathtaking, dynamically expressive, and—above all—more human.”

As for Thames, he’s a great young actor and landing Dick Grayson gives him one of DC’s most popular characters to play with. Grayson has a long road from street kid to Robin to Nightwing, and Dynamic Duo appears interested in exploring a much earlier part of that journey alongside Jason Todd.

Judging by the pile of Nightwing reading material Thames just showed off, he’s got some homework to do before Dynamic Duo hits theaters on September 22, 2028.
