New Aragorn Actor Jamie Dornan Explains How His Performance Will Differ From Viggo Mortensen in THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM

by · GeekTyrant

Taking over the role of Aragorn from Viggo Mortensen is a pretty intimidating gig, especially when his performance in The Lord of the Rings trilogy is considered iconic.

But Jamie Dornan, who will play the legendary Ranger in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, isn't interested in competing with the actor who came before him.

Dornan knows he's stepping into some seriously big boots, and he's approaching the role with plenty of respect for Mortensen's portrayal of the future King of Gondor.

Speaking with L’Officiel, the 44-year-old actor opened up about the challenge of playing such a beloved character and why he isn't trying to replace what Mortensen brought to Middle-earth.

“There’s pressure when you’re trying to follow in those footsteps. I’ve been asked to play a super-iconic role, and I’ll do my best. But for me, Aragorn will always be just Viggo.

“His performance is one of my all-time favorites, and I feel honored to try to recapture at least some of the energy he originally brought to the character. There’s no part of me that’s trying to outdo him.”

That's an understandable attitude to have when taking on a character that fans have loved for more than two decades.

Rather than attempting to recreate Mortensen's performance, Dornan wants to capture some of what made it special while finding his own way into the character.

The Hunt for Gollum gives him an opportunity to explore a different chapter of Aragorn's life.

The story takes place between Bilbo Baggins' birthday celebration and Frodo's departure from the Shire.

With the threat of Sauron growing, Gandalf sends Aragorn on a dangerous mission to track down Gollum before he can reveal information about the One Ring that could put the Shire in danger.

That means we'll get to see more of Aragorn's adventures as Strider, tracking threats across Middle-earth before he joins the Fellowship.

Andy Serkis is directing the film and returning to play Gollum, with Ian McKellen reprising Gandalf, Elijah Wood returning as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace coming back as Thranduil.

The cast also includes Kate Winslet, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Leo Woodall, who plays Halvard, a fellow Ranger accompanying Aragorn on his dangerous tracking missions.

Woodall is already backing his co-star's take on the character, saying, “I can say that, now, my Aragorn is Jamie Dornan.”

That's a nice vote of confidence, especially considering the expectations that come with playing one of Middle-earth's most recognizable heroes.

There's also some familiar creative talent helping bring the project together. Peter Jackson is returning as a producer alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, keeping several of the key filmmakers from the original trilogy involved.

The big question will be how Dornan makes Aragorn his own while maintaining the qualities that made Mortensen's performance so memorable.

Getting to spend more time with Strider before the events of the Fellowship could make for a pretty cool adventure.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
