James Gunn Teases BATMAN BEYOND Movie: “That’s a Great Thing for the Future”
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantA Batman Beyondmovie needs to happen, and it sounds like James Gunn is interested in making that a reality at DC Studios. The filmmaker recently shared his enthusiasm for bringing the futuristic version of Batman to the big screen, giving fans some hope that Terry McGinnis could eventually get his own movie.
While attending the premiere of DC's Clayface, Gunn was asked about the possibility of adapting the beloved animated series into a feature film. Speaking with Hola!, he offered an encouraging response: “I love Batman Beyond. So that’s a great thing for the future.”
That's certainly something fans will be happy to hear! Gunn didn't confirm that a movie is happening, but he obviously sees potential in the property. He also pointed out that DC has already found tremendous success bringing characters from animation into live-action projects.
“I think that’s something that originated in animation that could be a good movie. I mean, obviously, Harley Quinn originated in animation, and she’s become one of the biggest characters in all of comic books. So, why not?”
Created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Burnett, Batman Beyond premiered in 1999 and introduced audiences to a futuristic Gotham City where Bruce Wayne had grown too old to continue fighting crime.
The series followed teenager Terry McGinnis, who took over as Batman with an elderly Bruce Wayne serving as his mentor. Equipped with an awesome high-tech Batsuit, Terry faced a new generation of villains while trying to live up to the legacy of the Dark Knight.
The show ran for three seasons before ending in 2001, but Terry's adventures continued in comic books and other animated projects.
I absolutely loved the animated series! It took everything that made Batman great and gave it a fresh sci-fi spin. The futuristic Gotham City, the advanced technology, the villains, and the relationship between Terry and Bruce made it awesome.
Seeing that world brought to life in a big-budget live-action movie would be incredible, and it would be such a shame if DC never made it happen.
The frustrating part is that Warner Bros. previously had a live-action Batman Beyond movie in development before Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios.
That project reportedly would have brought Michael Keaton back as an older Bruce Wayne, with Michelle Pfeiffer also linked to the film. Christina Hodson, who wrote The Flash and Batgirl, was reportedly attached to write the screenplay.
Unfortunately, Warner Bros. shelved the project following its decision to cancel Batgirl as a tax write-off. Keaton returning to mentor a younger Batman could have been something awesome, especially with the history he already has playing the character. It's unfortunate that fans never got to see that version of the story.
Of course, there's still the question of how Batman Beyond would fit into Gunn's plans for the DC Universe. DC Studios already has The Brave and the Bold in development, which will introduce a Batman operating within the connected DCU alongside his son, Damian Wayne. Meanwhile, Matt Reeves is continuing his separate Batman universe.
A Batman Beyond movie could potentially exist as its own standalone project, and it wouldn’t need to incorporate Terry McGinnis into its larger cinematic universe. For now, nothing has been officially announced, but it's cool to know that Gunn appreciates the animated series and recognizes its potential as a movie.
Personally, I think Batman Beyond is one of the coolest Batman concepts to come from DC Animation, and there's so much that could be done with it on the big screen.
Would you like to see DC Studios finally make a Batman Beyond movie, and would you want Michael Keaton back as an aging Bruce Wayne?
