Robert Downey Jr. Says AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Is "Absolutely Fantastic" and Thinks Marvel "May Redeem Ourselves Yet"

Marvel fans have been picking apart every reveal from San Diego Comic-Con, but one of the biggest reactions didn't come from the footage itself.

It came from Robert Downey Jr., who has actually seen Avengers: Doomsday and couldn't hide how excited he is about what Marvel Studios has put together.

While he's keeping the movie's biggest surprises under wraps, Downey said that fans have something massive to look forward to.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the cast of Avengers: Doomsday was asked if anyone had seen the completed film. Downey, who returns to the MCU as Doctor Doom, smiled and answered: "I'm on the inside track, and it is absolutely fantastic."

That immediately got the attention of his castmates. David Harbour, who plays Red Guardian, followed up by asking if the movie was even better than the footage Marvel showed during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

Downey responded with a tease that will only fuel fan speculation: "It's like that except extra, and I'll sidebar with all of you. I think we may redeem ourselves yet."

It's an interesting comment considering the mixed reception some recent Marvel projects have received. Whether Downey was joking or making a playful nod to fans who've wanted the MCU to get back to firing on all cylinders, he clearly has confidence in Doomsday.

If you missed Marvel's Hall H presentation, we were treated to an awesome new look at the film. The footage opened with Doctor Doom sitting on his throne as Sue Storm describes how Victor Von Doom transformed from a brilliant scientist into one of the most dangerous villains imaginable.

Doom is then shown staring at an image of his wife and child, the same one featured on the movie's poster, before warning the Avengers about his quest for justice and unleashing an army of resurrected Sentinels.

The movie also has enormous expectations resting on its shoulders. It's the first Avengers film since Avengers: Endgame, which became the highest-grossing Marvel Studios film ever with an incredible $2.8 billion worldwide during its theatrical run.

Marvel is even planning to release an extended cut of Endgame just months before Doomsday arrives, complete with new scenes designed to set up and lead lead directly into the next chapter.

Even with those comparisons hanging over it, it sounds like Doomsday isn't interested in repeating the formula that made Endgame such a phenomenon.

Paul Rudd, who returns as Ant-Man, explained that the experience felt unlike anything he'd worked on in the MCU before, saying:

"It does feel unique. This one's like, 'Oh, I haven't seen this.' I'm excited to see the film because I know being there, reading it, working on it, the enormity of it was apparent and it felt very fresh."

That lines up with Marvel's own description of the film. According to the official synopsis: "Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday.

“Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they've ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of the studio's biggest swings yet. Whether it lives up to the impossible expectations remains to be seen, but the fans sure are excited about what is coming!

Avengers: Doomsday flies into theaters on December 18.
