Christopher Nolan’s THE PRESTIGE Is Getting a 20th Anniversary Re-Release in IMAX and 70mm
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantOne of Christopher Nolan’s best movies is heading back to theaters, and this time, audiences will get to experience it in a whole new way! The Prestige is getting a 20th anniversary theatrical re-release, with its first-ever IMAX and 70mm screenings.
Disney has set the re-release for January 29, 2027, giving fans another chance to experience Nolan’s fantastic magician thriller on the big screen, now in premium formats that weren't available during its original run.
Nolan shared his excitement about the anniversary screenings, saying: “I’m very excited to bring ‘The Prestige’ back to the big screen, and particularly thrilled to offer audiences the chance to see it on 70mm film, and on Imax for the first time.”
Originally released on October 20, 2006, The Prestige stars Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as rival stage magicians whose obsession with outdoing each other turns into an increasingly dangerous competition.
The film also features an excellent supporting cast that includes Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis, and David Bowie.
The Prestige is easily one of my favorite Nolan films. The whole concept of two dueling magicians trying to one-up each other was already awesome, but then you add everything else the story throws at you, and it becomes something special. It's such a great movie, and it's wild to think that it's already been 20 years since it first hit theaters!
Nolan co-wrote the screenplay with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, and produced the film alongside Emma Thomas and Aaron Ryder. The movie earned roughly $100 million worldwide and received two Academy Award nominations.
Since then, Nolan has become one of Hollywood's biggest filmmakers, delivering movies like The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, and Oppenheimer. His work has also helped turn IMAX and large-format film presentations into major theatrical attractions.
It's pretty cool that The Prestige is finally getting the IMAX and 70mm treatment after all these years. I'm excited to get the opportunity to watch it in theaters again, especially in a format like IMAX.
If you haven't seen The Prestige before, this is a great opportunity to experience it for the first time. If you're already a fan, you know why this one is worth revisiting.
The Prestige returns to theaters on January 29, 2027.
