Zack Snyder Offers New REBEL MOON 3 Update, But Netflix Will Need Some Convincing
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantZack Snyderhas offered an update on Rebel Moon 3, and while the filmmaker still hopes to continue his massive sci-fi saga at Netflix, it sounds like the future of the franchise depends heavily on audiences finding their way back to it.
During a recent interview with The Direct at TIFF, Snyder was asked whether fans have any chance of seeing a third movie anytime soon. His answer suggests he’s hoping the R-rated Director’s Cuts of the first two films can gradually attract more viewers and generate enough interest for Netflix to consider another installment.
“I don’t know. I think that, like, you know, I think that, like, you know, because I was saying recently, like, you know, I made those – the director’s cuts of the movies, and I just think it’s, like, one of those things where – and I do feel it, you know, is that as those maybe, like, get a little bit more popular and sort of, like, get discovered, then there’s a little bit more groundswell about maybe making another one.”
So, Rebel Moon 3 isn’t dead, but it certainly doesn’t sound like Netflix is preparing to fire up the engines anytime soon.
That’s a considerable shift from some of the earlier talk surrounding the franchise. Co-writer Kurt Johnstad previously revealed that the creative team had “detailed outlines” covering movies three through six. At one point, there was clearly a much bigger future being imagined for Rebel Moon.
Since then, things have slowed considerably. Patrick Luwis, who played Ivar in the films, recently said he hasn’t heard anything about returning. Snyder has also acknowledged getting “sidetracked” by his grounded LAPD action thriller for Netflix, another project that hasn’t received an official update in a while and has reportedly faced budget issues.
Netflix also doesn’t appear to be pursuing Snyder’s other expanded universes as aggressively as it once did. The animated projects connected to Army of the Dead have faded away, while Snyder’s adult animated Norse mythology series Twilight of the Gods won’t return for a second season.
The biggest obstacle facing Rebel Moon, though, may simply be the numbers. Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire launched in late 2023 and initially performed well, recording 57.8 million views during the second half of that year. It added another 54.2 million in the first half of 2024 and has reached a lifetime total of 135.6 million views.
Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver couldn’t maintain that audience. The sequel debuted with 55.8 million views during the first half of 2024, then dropped to 10 million in the second half. Its lifetime total currently sits at 76 million views, roughly 44% below the first movie.
That kind of drop makes another expensive sci-fi installment a much tougher sell. The Director’s Cuts Snyder hopes could generate renewed interest have also attracted a much smaller audience. Released during the second half of 2024, the extended cuts of Part One and Part Two initially recorded 7.6 million and 8.3 million views. Their lifetime totals now stand at 13.6 million and 14.2 million.
There was a small increase during the first half of 2026, with both Director’s Cuts bringing in 2.4 million views after each recorded 1.5 million during the second half of 2025. It’s movement in the right direction, but those numbers remain relatively small for a franchise built around massive sci-fi spectacle.
That leaves Snyder in an interesting position. He already has plans for where the story could go, and he clearly hasn’t given up on continuing Kora’s journey. The question is whether enough people will return to Rebel Moon to convince Netflix that another expensive chapter makes sense. That most likely won’t happen, though.
For now, Rebel Moon 3 remains a possibility rather than an active production. Snyder is counting on the Director’s Cuts finding a larger audience over time, but unless those movies experience a major resurgence, Netflix may be content leaving this particular rebellion unfinished.
Would you like to see Snyder get the chance to make Rebel Moon 3, or did the first two movies give you enough of this universe?
