DON’T BREATHE 3 Will Bring Back Jane Levy and Stephen Lang

Ten years after Fede Alvarez trapped audiences inside one seriously dangerous Detroit house, Don’t Breathe is getting another sequel, and this time the franchise is bringing back the two characters who started the nightmare.

Don’t Breathe 3 is in the works, with Jane Levy returning as Rocky and Stephen Lang back as Norman Nordstrom, aka the Blind Man. Alvarez confirmed the news during a Beyond Fest Q&A, revealing, “there’s a screenplay for Don’t Breathe 3,” and that Levy and Lang will both return.

That’s a pretty exciting development for the horror franchise, especially since Levy sat out Don’t Breathe 2. Her return gives the third movie a chance to reconnect directly with the unresolved events of the original film and finally reveal what happened to Rocky after she escaped with Norman’s money.

Alvarez directed Don’t Breathe, which hit theaters in 2016 after he previously worked with Levy on Evil Dead. The film introduced Lang as Norman, a visually impaired Navy SEAL veteran whose home invasion quickly turned into something far more horrifying than the thieves breaking into his house expected.

The story continued in 2021 with Don’t Breathe 2, directed by original co-writer Rodo Sayagues. That movie focused entirely on Norman and pushed the character away from the outright villain of the first film and into antihero territory. Rocky was nowhere to be found.

Sayagues previously talked about the possibility of revisiting Rocky while promoting the second movie, pointing out that neither character really walked away from the original story with a clean slate.

“I think stories are never wrapped. If something is true about the first movie, is that there’s no closure on both ends,” he said. “There was no closure for the story of Norman and there’s no closure for the story of Rocky. They both got away with a crime, both of them.”

He continued: “Rocky stole a lot of money. And also, she let him get away with it. She could have called the police and [said], ‘Look, this guy has a dead girl in the cellar,’ and she did not. So both of them have a past that will haunt them. I think we’re going after the Blind Man first.”

That comment ended up being accurate when Don’t Breathe 2 followed Norman, but Rocky’s side of the story has remained untouched. Bringing Levy back creates plenty of interesting possibilities for Don’t Breathe 3, particularly with both characters carrying some nasty history from their first encounter.

The big question now is what could possibly bring Rocky and Norman back into each other’s lives. Their relationship certainly isn’t one that lends itself to a friendly reunion.

There’s currently no word on who will direct Don’t Breathe 3, when production might begin, or when the sequel will be released. For now, knowing that Levy and Lang are returning is more than enough to make this third chapter worth watching.

After Don’t Breathe 2 took the series in a very different direction, bringing Rocky back into the picture could reconnect the franchise with what made the original movie work so well.

Now we just have to wait and see what kind of trouble is waiting for her when she crosses paths with the Blind Man again.
