Fans of Adventure Timehave another trip to the Land of Ooo on the horizon, and this time two of the franchise’s most beloved characters are taking the spotlight.

Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe officially announced at the Annecy Animation Festival that HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order for Adventure Time: Bubblegum and Marceline.

The new animated spinoff will consist of 10 episodes and continue expanding the wildly popular fantasy universe created by Pendleton Ward.

The series arrives following the success ofAdventure Time: Fionna and Cakeand Adventure Time: Distant Lands, both of which proved there’s still plenty of life left in the franchise. Returning to guide the next chapter is Emmy-winning Adventure Time veteran Adam Muto, who will serve as both showrunner and executive producer.

According to the official logline, the story follows “Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen journey across the farthest reaches of Ooo, encountering familiar faces and new dangers.”

Unlike the upcoming Adventure Time: Side Quests, which is built around standalone adventures and is set to premiere on June 29 on Disney+ and Hulu, Bubblegum and Marceline is expected to tell a larger serialized story that can unfold over multiple episodes and potentially multiple seasons.

Princess Bubblegum and Marceline have remained two of the franchise’s most popular characters for years. Their relationship became a defining part of the series, especially after the original show’s 2018 finale confirmed what many fans had hoped for when the two shared a kiss.

At the time, it marked a significant moment for LGBTQ+ representation in children’s animation and helped cement the pair as icons within the fandom.

Their popularity has only grown through fan support, online communities, and appearances in subsequent Adventure Time projects. Now, they're finally getting a series of their own.

Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President of HBO and HBO Max Comedy Programming, shared her excitement about the project, saying: “We can’t wait to see where Adam’s boundless imagination takes us in this new series. It’s such a joy to go on another Adventure Time journey with our friends and partners at Cartoon Network Studios.”

Sam Register, President of Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, added: “Adventure Time remains one of the most inventive and beloved worlds in animation. Alongside our partners at HBO Max, we’re thrilled to continue expanding that universe with Adam and his incredibly talented team.”

Muto also spoke about returning to the franchise once again: “Continuing in the spirit of Fionna & Cake, I’m excited that the next Adventure Time series will feature two more of my favorite characters: Bubblegum & Marceline. It’s been a fantastic opportunity to revisit old friends and build onto the world of Adventure Time.”

The project was reportedly greenlit two months ago and is currently in the writing phase, which means fans will likely have to wait a bit longer before seeing these new adventures come to life.

Muto will executive produce alongside Fred Seibert, a longtime producer on the Adventure Time franchise, and Register.

The announcement served as one of the biggest reveals during Warner Bros. Animation’s packed Annecy presentation. The showcase also included previews of Adventure Time: Side Quests, footage from Yokoso Scooby-Doo, clips from Foster’s Fun Time With Imaginary Friends, and a look at Supermutant Magic Academy, which is headed to Adult Swim.

It was also revealed that Genndy Tartakovsky and Cartoon Network Studios are developing an animated adaptation of Conan the Barbarian for Prime Video.

After years of fan demand and continued popularity, it looks like Princess Bubblegum and Marceline are finally getting the adventure they deserve.
