SHANG-CHI Director Says Marvel's Post-ENDGAME Struggles Derailed the Sequel: "Everything Went to Shit"

It's been five years since Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introduced audiences to one of the MCU's most exciting new heroes, and fans are still wondering when they'll finally get to see Shang-Chi back in action in a sequel.

While Marvel Studios has stayed quiet about the sequel's timeline, director Destin Daniel Cretton has now offered the clearest explanation yet for why the follow-up has taken so long.

According to Cretton, the delay has very little to do with Shang-Chi himself. Instead, he points to the massive changes Marvel Studios went through after Avengers: Endgame.

Speaking with The Wrap, Cretton reflected on how dramatically things shifted across both Marvel and the entertainment industry after Endgame wrapped up the Infinity Saga.

“When you really look at what happened to the industry, at least from my perspective, it was just like everything went to shit after that. I feel like if Marvel was where it was before, we would have had maybe two sequels already. Who knows?”

It's an interesting perspective, and honestly, it's hard to argue that Marvel hasn't looked very different over the last several years. Following Endgame, the studio dramatically expanded its slate with a flood of theatrical releases and Disney+ series.

While some projects connected with audiences, others received mixed reactions and struggled at the box office. Eventually, Marvel decided to hit the brakes and shift its focus toward producing fewer projects with more attention on quality.

Unfortunately, that change also meant several films in development ended up taking much longer to move forward. Based on Cretton's comments, Shang-Chi 2 became one of the casualties of that reset.

That's got to be frustrating for a filmmaker. When you've poured years into develping a character and a world, and you're excited to jump back in and continue that story, having the momentum disappear because the studio's entire business strategy changes has to be incredibly disappointing.

It's a reminder that even when everyone involved wants to make the next chapter, the Hollywood machine doesn't always cooperate.

Released in 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introduced Simu Liu as Marvel's newest hero and quickly became one of the MCU's standout origin stories. The film earned around $432 million worldwide and was praised for its incredible martial arts choreography, memorable performances, and fresh approach to the superhero genre.

The cast also featured Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Meng'er Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, and Benedict Wong, helping create a cast that fans have been eager to see reunited.

Marvel Studios still hasn't announced a release date for Shang-Chi 2, but Cretton's comments at least shed some light on why fans have been waiting so long.

Hopefully, now that Marvel has narrowed its focus, Shang-Chi's next adventure will finally get the green light and give one of the MCU's best newer heroes the sequel he deserves.

We will see Shang-Chi back in action in Avengers: Doomsday, though.
