ARTIFICIAL Trailer Drops Andrew Garfield Into the Chaos of Sam Altman’s OpenAI Firing

Silicon Valley’s strangest corporate meltdown is getting the big-screen treatment, and Andrew Garfield is right in the middle of it as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Neon has released the first trailer for Artificial, the new film from Luca Guadagnino that digs into the five chaotic days in 2023 when Altman was abruptly fired from OpenAI, only to return as CEO days later.

Garfield plays Altman as the pressure surrounding artificial intelligence, OpenAI and the future of the technology continues to grow. The trailer gives the whole thing an appropriately uneasy edge, turning Silicon Valley boardroom drama into something that looks increasingly ominous as the stakes climb.

Guadagnino has also assembled a strong group of actors to play some very recognizable figures from the AI world. Ike Barinholtz takes on OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk, while Monica Barbaro plays former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati.

Yura Borisov, who broke out with Anora, stars as former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, and Mark Rylance plays Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton.

Jason Schwartzman, Zosia Mamet, Cooper Hoffman, Chris O’Dowd, Cooper Koch and Billie Lourd round out the cast.

The story surrounding Artificial getting into theaters has become nearly as interesting as the events it dramatizes.

Amazon MGM Studios originally planned to release the movie worldwide before dropping it earlier this year. That decision attracted plenty of attention because Amazon had entered into a major partnership with OpenAI that included a $50 billion investment.

Amazon MGM Studios explained that Artificial would “be better served if it were released by a different studio.”

The film was subsequently shopped around Hollywood, but Netflix, A24 and Focus Features passed on it. Neon eventually stepped in and acquired worldwide distribution rights in June 2026, giving Guadagnino’s movie a path to theaters and a potentially interesting awards-season run.

Guadagnino directed Artificial from a screenplay by Simon Rich, the former Saturday Night Live writer.

Artificial intelligence remains one of the biggest and most divisive subjects in technology and entertainment, while the circumstances surrounding Altman’s firing continue to make the OpenAI story ripe for a corporate drama.

The New York Film Festival describes Guadagnino’s movie as a “thrilling, funny, and very human” story that follows roughly two decades of machine-learning history leading into the current AI era.

Artificial opens in theaters Christmas Day.
