THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM Gets Major Casting Update as New Characters and a Younger Aragorn Are Sought
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantFans keeping an eye on the next journey back to Middle-earth just got an interesting update. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollumis still in development, and while a lot of the cast remains a mystery, a new report reveals that the film has started casting several key roles including two new female characters and a younger version of Aragorn.
The upcoming film was first announced in 2024 with Andy Serkisset to direct. Serkis is also returning to the world he helped make iconic by reprising his role as Gollum and Sméagol.
For many fans, that made this project worth paying attention to. Seeing Serkis step into the director’s chair while also bringing the tortured creature back to life is a pretty exciting combo.
Now we’re learning more about who might be joining him.
According to Knight Edge Media, casting is underway for two female roles. The casting descriptions are fairly vague but still intriguing. The characters are listed as “30s, female, white, lead role” and “50s, female, white, supporting role,” with no additional information revealed about who they are or how they fit into the story.
The report also clarifies something that longtime fans might have been wondering about. The casting calls are “not for any possible returning actresses that could appear, such as Cate Blanchett as Lady Galadriel or Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel.
“This casting call also confirmed that a new 30-year-old actor would be auditioning for the role of Aragorn/Strider, rather than Viggo Mortensen returning.”
That news initially sparked plenty of conversation in the fan community. Mortensen’s portrayal of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy is legendary, but the timeline of this story seems to call for a younger Ranger roaming Middle-earth.
As for the two new female roles, speculation has already started swirling. Some believe the characters could be a younger version of Arwen, Sméagol’s grandmother, or even Aragorn’s mother. At the moment that’s just speculation, but it does hint that the film could explore corners of Middle-earth we haven’t seen on screen before.
The story of The Hunt for Gollum has long been a fascinating piece of Tolkien lore. The tale centers is set durring the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, diving into a crucial chapter that was only briefly referenced in the original trilogy.
“Before the Fellowship, one creature’s obsession holds the key to Middle-earth’s survival — or its demise. In The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, we meet young Smeagol — an outsider drawn to trinkets and mischief — long before The One Ring consumed him and began his tragic descent into the tortured, deceitful creature Gollum.
“With the ring lost and carried away by Bilbo Baggins, Gollum finds himself compelled to leave his cave in search of it.
“Gandalf the Grey calls upon Aragorn, still known as the ranger Strider, to track the elusive creature whose knowledge of the whereabouts of the ring could tip the balance toward the Dark Lord Sauron.
“Set in the shadowed time between Bilbo’s birthday disappearance and the Fellowship’s formation, this perilous journey through Middle-earth’s darkest corners reveals untold truths, tests the resolve of its future king, and explores the fractured soul and backstory of Gollum, one of Tolkien’s most enigmatic characters.
“Directed by original cast member Andy Serkis, produced by Peter Jackson, and written & produced by Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens — the creative team behind the Oscar-winning trilogy — this live-action movie bridges the beloved films with new characters, returning heroes, and a deeply engaging origin story that resets the stage for, and changes everything you know about the legendary Lord of the Rings trilogy.”
The film is being produced by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the creative team that helped shape the original Lord of the Rings trilogy into one of the most beloved fantasy franchises ever made.
Production is expected to begin later this year, which means we’ll likely start hearing more casting announcements soon as the project moves forward.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 17, 2027 from Warner Bros. Pictures.
