MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Recreates the “Skeletor Facts” Meme
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantAmazon MGM Studios is clearly having some fun with Masters of the Universe marketing, because the latest promo image for the movie takes direct aim at one of the internet’s favorite memes… “Skeletor Facts.”
The image features Jared Leto’s live-action Skeletor delivering one of those classic uncomfortable truth bombs before presumably sprinting off with a dramatic “Until we meet again!”
While the studio didn’t include the full meme setup, fans instantly recognized what they were going for, and it’s a pretty hilarious deep cut for internet dwellers and He-Man fans alike.
The meme has been floating around online since 2021 and usually involves Skeletor dropping a disturbingly accurate fact about life before making his exit. Seeing the character translated into live-action meme form feels like exactly the kind of weirdly self-aware marketing that genre fans eat up.
Masters of the Universe seems to be taking Skeletor very seriously in the movie. Early reactions to the film have reportedly been strong, with many praising director Travis Knight for leaning into the mythology and respecting the source material while still making it feel cinematic and modern.
Knight recently spoke with Polygon about the process of bringing Skeletor to life onscreen, saying: "It was always very clear to me what methodology we needed to do to bring the Skeletor to life.
“Skeletor has a skull for a face. There were iterations long before I became involved in this project where Skeletor had a gold mask and when I heard that I was outraged because he doesn't wear a mask.
“He's got a skull for a face! He's a talking emoting skull! So we had to have a skull for a face. That also meant it was going to be CG because you can't flay an actor to play Skeletor."
Knight went on to explain how the production blended practical effects with CGI to create the villain: "But we wanted an onscreen performance, not motion capture. We wanted a real person to embody that character.
“So in the end, it was a combination of CG, an incredible costume, and an extraordinary muscle suit brought to life by our prosthetics master, Barrie Gower, who was just absolutely astonishing. He did so many incredible prosthetic effects on the film.
“Jared Leto gave a performance in full costume and in his muscle suit. And then after the fact, we'd go through in visual effects and replace Jared's face with this CG skull."
Fans have spent decades wanting a truly faithful live-action Skeletor, and Knight seems determined to finally deliver one that actually looks like the character stepped out of the classic cartoon and toy line.
There’s also been talk online recently claiming Leto hasn’t been very active promoting the movie because he supposedly isn’t thrilled with how it turned out.
At the same time, the actor has also been dealing with serious sexual misconduct allegations, which could easily explain why the studio is keeping the spotlight more focused on the film itself rather than its villain actor.
The movie stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, who returns to Eternia after being separated from his home for 15 years. Armed with the Sword of Power, Adam discovers that Skeletor has devastated the planet during his absence.
To save Eternia, Adam joins forces with Teela, played by Camila Mendes, and Duncan aka Man-At-Arms, played by Idris Elba, as he finally embraces his destiny as He-Man.
The cast also includes Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress, James Purefoy as King Randor, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man, Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man, Stephen Adentan as Moss Man, James Wilkinson as Mekaneck, and Kristen Wiig as Roboto.
Whether the “Skeletor Facts” gag actually makes it into the movie or stays strictly as marketing material remains to be seen, but it’s cool seeing the studio acknowledge the bizarre internet legacy the character has built over the years.
Masters of the Universe hits theaters on June 5.
