AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Co-Director Joe Russo Says He Thinks Spoiler Culture Has Become a Little "Over-Policed"
by Jessica Fisher · GeekTyrantThe Russo Brothers directed the last two Avengers movies, Infinity War and Endgame, which had some of the biggest and coolest surprises in cinema history.
Watching the films in theaters was such an incredible experience. I had never heard a crowd of movie-goers cheer quite so loudly, and mourn in unison in such a way that it felt bigger than just a trip to the movies.
The stories were a great closing out of a chapter in the MCU, and part of the excitement was the surprises throughout the films.
While these next two films, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, are poised to be just as thrilling, and full of surprises of their own, co-director Joe Russo says that he believes spoiler culture has maybe gone too far.
In an interview with Metro, Joe Russo explained: “On one hand, audiences want to be surprised, and that’s part of what makes the theatrical experience exciting.
“On the other hand, it can become a little over-policed, where people are anxious about engaging with anything. We design these films to unfold in a certain way, and we want audiences to feel those moments as intended.
“But at the same time, you can’t control everything. You have to focus on making something that holds up beyond the initial surprise.”
I bet some spoilers making the rounds ahead of a film’s release build the excitement, while some are more carefully guarded. There are obviously moments that would really be bad for viewers to be privy to before the film’s release.
Angela Russo-Otstot, Chief Creative Officer at the Russo’s production company AGBO, weighed in on the subject, stating, “There’s some serious lockdown at our company. And it’s a very limited group that are across the different things that Anthony and Joe are aware of. We may think we know things and we’re wrong!”
There’s plenty of cloak and dagger going on over at Marvel and AGBO that will aid in the filmmakers’ due diligence to bring us some shock and awe when the movies are finally released. I am really excited to see how they end up playing out.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on December 17, 2027.
