What If Ghost Sightings Are Really Dimensions Colliding? This BISECTED Short Film Explores a Chilling Sci-Fi Possibility

by · GeekTyrant

What if every ghost story we've ever heard wasn't supernatural at all? What if those unexplained moments were actually the result of two dimensions briefly overlapping?

That's the fascinating idea at the center of Bisected, a grounded sci-fi short film from director Danny Piñeros. The film follows a couple who witness a paranormal event that suddenly separates them into two distinct dimensions, leaving them trapped in different versions of reality.

It's a clever, unsettling concept that blends paranormal mystery with science fiction, while also exploring the emotional strain of a relationship already dealing with unresolved issues.

Rather than relying on massive visual effects sequences, Bisected takes a more practical and grounded approach, which only makes its strange events feel more believable.

Piñeros discussed the inspiration behind the project and the creative challenges that came with bringing the story to life. He explained:

“Transitioning from music videos to narrative filmmaking, I've always been driven by the desire to craft stories that captivate from the outset. With this project, my focus shifted towards a high-concept narrative, where the central idea takes precedence over individual characters.

“It was a challenge I set for myself: to produce an engaging narrative from start to finish. My long-standing fascination with the paranormal, particularly when juxtaposed with scientific explanations, served as the foundation for this film.

“I've often pondered questions like, 'How do objects move seemingly of their own accord?' Could there be another dimension coexisting with ours, occasionally intersecting and producing what we perceive as 'ghostly' phenomena? This line of thought led to the inception of 'Bisected.' From the outset, I was deeply passionate about this concept.

“I've always yearned to delve into the sci-fi genre, but in a manner that didn't rely on extravagant budgets or heavy VFX. The practical effects we employed, such as the door, the radio, and the woman's disappearance, are testament to this approach. In terms of mood and tone, I drew significant inspiration from Denis Villeneuve's work. 'Sicario,' with its tension, tone, and camera movements, became a reference point for our film.

"My aim was to craft a grounded sci-fi piece with the emotional depth of a drama. I believe this story has potential beyond its current format. It's not just about the interdimensional concept but also the complexities of a relationship under strain.

"The narrative hints at a couple grappling with past issues, now thrust into an extraordinary situation. It's a story I'm eager to expand upon, and I envision 'Bisected' as a feature film, allowing me to fully explore and conclude the narrative I've begun.”

I like how Bisected approaches its science-fiction premise through a paranormal lens. Instead of presenting ghosts as supernatural entities, the story asks whether unexplained phenomena could be the result of realities brushing against one another for a fleeting moment. It's the kind of idea that sticks with you long after the credits roll.

What makes Bisected especially exciting is that it feels like a concept with plenty of room to grow. The dimensional mystery is compelling on its own, but the relationship drama at the center of the story gives the premise an emotional foundation.

If Piñeros eventually expands the project into a feature film, there seems to be a lot of rich territory left to explore.

For fans of thoughtful sci-fi that favors big ideas, practical filmmaking, and psychological tension over flashy effects, Bisected looks like a very cool glimpse at what could become a much larger story.
