Marvel’s VISIONQUEST Trailer Unleashes Ultron and Sets Vision on a Dangerous New Journey
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantThe next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is shaping up to be a pretty big event, and no, I’m not talking about Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel Studios is bringing the story that began with WandaVision to a close with VisionQuest, and the full trailer has arrived ahead of its two-episode premiere on Disney+ on October 14.
The series continues story threads from WandaVision and Agatha All Along, while sending Vision into an entirely new kind of adventure that involves dangerous enemies, questions about his identity, and the return of one of the MCU’s most notorious villains.
Paul Bettany is back as Vision, and this time he’ll be sharing the screen with James Spader, who returns as Ultron. That alone makes this series something I’ve been looking forward to seeing.
The trailer shows us that VisionQuest is going to have its own distinct identity within the MCU. Vision has been rebooted and living in hiding after escaping those who wanted to turn him into a weapon. As he searches for meaning and attempts to understand exactly who and what he is now, he turns to the various AI personalities buried within his programming.
Those include F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and, unfortunately for Vision, Ultron. His attempt at keeping a low profile doesn't last long, though. A bounty is placed on Vision, forcing him to go on the run alongside Thomas Shepard, a mysterious young man who could have an incredibly important connection to him.
Marvel's official description reads: "When VisionQuest begins, Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron. His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son, reincarnate.
As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron’s influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he’s to survive.”
The trailer also gives us another look at Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff/Speed and Thomas Shepherd, and his abilities certainly bring Pietro Maximoff to mind. How all of this connects back to Wanda, Billy, and the events of Agatha All Along is one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the series.
The cast also includes Todd Stashwick as Paladin, T’Nia Miller as Jocasta, Lauren Morais as Lisa Molinari, Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Diane Morgan as an associate of Paladin, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis as D.U.M.-E, Jonathan Sayer as U, Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., and James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S.
Faran Tahir is also returning to the MCU as Raza, the character he originally played in Iron Man. Cristian Lavin and Mary McDonnell will appear in currently undisclosed roles.
The series is directed by Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali, and Terry Matalas. Matalas also serves as a writer alongside Cindy Appel, Christopher Monfette, Nicole Falsetti, and Matthew Okumura.
I’ve got to say, VisionQuest looks great! Vision has had one of the most interesting and unusual character arcs in the MCU. He started as an artificial being created from J.A.R.V.I.S., Ultron, the Mind Stone, and Tony Stark and Bruce Banner’s work, then gradually developed his own humanity, fell in love with Wanda, died twice, and eventually returned as the emotionally detached White Vision.
Now he’s out there trying to figure out who he actually is. That makes VisionQuest such an interesting opportunity for the character. His entire existence is basically an identity crisis, and bringing Ultron back into that story feels like a perfect way to force him to confront where he came from and what separates him from the beings and technology that created him.
I’m also incredibly curious to see what Marvel does with Tommy and how his story connects to Vision. After everything that happened with Billy in Agatha All Along, there are a lot of pieces on the board, and VisionQuest appears ready to start bringing them together.
And then there's Ultron. Getting Spader back in this role is awesome, and I'm excited to see what Matalas and the creative team have cooked up for him. Ultron has always felt like a character the MCU could have done more with, so bringing him back as something potentially lurking inside Vision's own programming is a cool direction to take things.
This looks weird, mysterious, emotional, and dangerous in all the right ways. More than anything, I'm excited to continue Vision's journey because his story still feels unfinished. After everything this character has experienced, I really want to see where Marvel takes him next and what Vision ultimately decides he wants to become.
VisionQuest premieres with two episodes on October 14 on Disney+.
