TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE Heads Back to Theaters in 4K With 40th Anniversary "Apology Tour"
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantI still remember sitting in the theater as a kid watching Transformers: The Moviefor the very first time. My uncle worked on the film, so getting to see it at the premiere felt like the coolest thing ever. Then the movie ripped my heart out by killing Optimus Prime.
Like a lot of kids from that era, I was completely wrecked by it. Regardless, I still love that movie! It’s a fun movie, even though so many characters were killed off.
Now fans are going to get the chance to relive the trauma and the greatness on the big screen again because Transformers: The Movie is officially returning to theaters for its 40th anniversary celebration.
Hasbro is teaming up with Fathom Entertainment to bring the animated classic back to U.S. theaters in a new 4K theatrical release running from September 17 through September 21, 2026.
When the film first hit theaters in 1986, it definitely caught fans off guard. Instead of playing it safe, the movie wiped out major characters including Optimus Prime and pushed the franchise into a darker, more epic sci-fi direction with Autobots, Decepticons, and planet-eating chaos colliding in spectacular fashion.
At the time, reactions were all over the place, and the film struggled at the box office. Over the years, though, it evolved into a beloved cult classic that fans still passionately talk about today.
Apparently, Hasbro knows exactly how many childhood scars this movie left behind because the company jokingly described this anniversary celebration as part of its “Apology Tour,” designed to bring “fans together to grieve, heal, and reminisce at special fan events all year long, including the film’s return to theaters.”
Alyse D’Antuono, Vice President, Global Brand & Franchise Strategy, Action Brands, Hasbro, said: “For decades, Transformers fans have carried this film with them, which is a testament to its storytelling and lasting cultural impact.
“Bringing it back to theaters is an opportunity for longtime fans to relive it together, and for new audiences to experience a defining chapter of Transformers history.”
Ray Nutt, Chief Executive Officer for Fathom Entertainment, added: “Few films have had a stronger and more lasting legacy than The Transformers: The Movie. Even 40 years later, this animated feature film remains a defining moment for fans across generations.
“Fathom is thrilled to team up with Hasbro to give audiences the opportunity to experience The Transformers: The Movie together in 4K on the big screen.”
The movie also featured an incredible voice cast that includes Peter Cullen, who voiced Optimus Prime, while Frank Welker played Megatron. The cast also included Orson Welles as Unicron, Judd Nelson as Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime, Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron, Eric Idle as Wreck-Gar, and Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus.
For fans, this feels like one of those theatrical events you just have to show up for. Seeing Transformers: The Movie in theaters again with a crowd reacting to all those massive moments, heartbreaking deaths, and insane battles sounds like a good time!
And yes... I’m fully prepared to get emotionally destroyed by Optimus Prime’s death all over again.
Tickets are expected to go on sale later this summer through participating theaters, and fans can keep an eye on Fathom Entertainment’s official website for updates and ticket information.
