Jack Black Might’ve Let Slip THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE 3 Release Window
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantIt looks like Jack Blackmay have gotten a little too comfortable on the mic and dropped a surprise that Nintendo fans weren’t exactly supposed to hear yet.
While promoting The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the voice of Bowser casually hinted that a third Mario movie could already be in the pipeline, and he even tossed out a possible release year.
During a playful interview with Cinemex, where Black and Donald Glover were riffing and freestyling about Bowser, things took an interesting turn. Black said:
"Don't be surprised if you hear that coming out next time. It's good. In 2029."
That’s a pretty specific window for something that hasn’t even been officially announced yet.
As of now, The Super Mario Movie 3 doesn’t exist on any confirmed slate from Universal Studios or Nintendo. But, it’s not really surprising to hear that there’s a third movie in the works.
The timing Black mentioned also actually lines up with how these movies have been rolling out. The first film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, hit theaters in April 2023 and exploded into a global phenomenon, becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever and pulling in over $500 million in just its first two weeks.
The sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, was confirmed in March 2024, though development hit a speed bump due to the 2023 WGA writers’ strike. Even with that delay, the pattern suggests a three-year gap between releases. If that holds, 2029 makes a lot of sense for a third installment.
Of course, there’s always the chance Black was just throwing out a guess based on that same pattern. Still, it’s hard not to read into it when it comes from someone directly involved in the franchise.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is already leveling things up in a big way and it’s making a ton of money, so a third film is inevitable. The film brings back Black as Bowser alongside Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach.
It also expands the universe with some awesome new additions, including Donald Glover as Yoshi, Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
Whether Black slipped up or just got ahead of himself, the idea of a third movie really doesn’t feel like a stretch at all. If anything, it feels inevitable. The real question is what the next story will tell.
