First Reactions to THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU Are Split, But One Thing Seems Clear... It’s a Fun Ride

After seven years away from theaters, Star Wars is finally making its return to the big screen with The Mandalorian and Grogu, and the first reactions are exactly what longtime fans probably expected.

Some people are loving the movie’s throwback adventure vibe while others think it feels too much like an extended Disney+ episode. Either way, the galaxy far, far away is once again sparking debate.

That’s just become part of the Star Wars experience at this point. When Disney revived the franchise with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, audiences showed up in massive numbers and excitement was through the roof.

But things got messy fast. Star Wars: The Last Jedi split fans down the middle, Solo: A Star Wars Story stumbled at the box office, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker left the Skywalker Saga ending on shaky ground.

Disney then shifted heavily toward streaming, where the quality of the franchise has bounced all over the place depending on the project.

Now The Mandalorian and Grogu is trying to bring the franchise back to theaters, but the reactions suggest the fanbase still feels just as divided as ever.

A lot of the discussion online centers around the movie feeling like a bigger version of the Disney+ series instead of a major cinematic event. That isn’t exactly shocking considering a lot of fans already expected that.

Personally, though, I had an awesome time with it. What worked for me is that the movie doesn’t get buried under endless lore dumps or galaxy-shaking canon reveals.

It plays more like a wild side quest across the Star Wars universe, and that’s where the franchise can still shine. It’s scrappy, pulpy, weird, and packed with energy and great character moments. The whole thing felt like a pulpy Saturday matinee adventure, and Ludwig Göransson absolutely crushes the score again.

His music gives the movie this cool synth-heavy flavor that reminded me of ‘80s sci-fi horror and action movies. There’s a texture and personality to the soundtrack that helps the film stand apart from the more traditional orchestral feel fans usually expect from Star Wars. It added a lot to the movie’s atmosphere.

More than anything, the movie reminded me how enjoyable Star Wars can be when it stops treating every story like mandatory canon homework and just goes out to have fun.

If audiences walk in expecting some giant mythology-altering epic, they may come away disappointed. But if they’re open to a fast-moving standalone adventure with cool creatures, exciting action, and plenty of Grogu greatness, there’s a good chance they’ll have a blast.

That seems to be the dividing line in many of the early reactions. Some viewers wanted a massive cinematic event that reshapes the future of the franchise. Others are perfectly happy getting a fun crowd-pleasing adventure movie that families can enjoy together.

Depending on what kind of Star Wars fan you are, your mileage is definitely going to vary. But one word keeps popping up repeatedly in reactions: fun. And, after years of heavy franchise baggage, maybe that’s exactly what Star Wars needs right now.

It also doesn’t help that this movie arrives after a pretty uneven stretch for the franchise. The Mandalorian Season 3 didn’t land nearly as well as the first two seasons, The Book of Boba Fett struggled to win people over, and Ahsoka received a mixed reception as well. So The Mandalorian and Grogu wasn’t exactly launching from a position of unstoppable momentum.

Still, the response doesn’t sound catastrophic. If anything, the overall mood appears more positive than what surrounded The Rise of Skywalker when that premiered.

At the end of the day, The Mandalorian and Grogu was never going to be the movie that completely resets and relaunches Star Wars on the big screen. That responsibility may fall more on next year’s Starfighter starring Ryan Gosling.

But if this film can remind audiences that Star Wars can still be adventurous, entertaining, funny, and full of heart, that’s a pretty solid win, and a whole lot of Grogu cuteness probably won’t hurt either.
