Trailer for THE SUN NEVER SETS Sees Dakota Fanning Caught Between Two Very Different Loves

It's been a while since filmmaker Joe Swanberg stepped into the spotlight with a new feature, but he's back with a romance that looks heartfelt, funny, and refreshingly human.

The first trailer for The Sun Never Sets has arrived, offering a look at a complicated love story set against the breathtaking backdrop of Alaska.

Premiering earlier this year at SXSW 2026, The Sun Never Sets looks like the kind of relationship drama that leans into life's messy moments without losing its warmth. Instead of delivering something heavy and emotionally draining, the film appears to embrace the awkward, funny, and unpredictable reality of love.

The story follows Wendy, played by Dakota Fanning, who believes she's found happiness with her boyfriend Jack, played by Jake Johnson.

Their relationship takes an unexpected turn when Jack, who is older, divorced, and has children, suggests they take some time apart so Wendy can honestly decide if she's comfortable letting go of the idea of marriage and having kids.

As fate would have it, that break leads Wendy back into the orbit of her former boyfriend Chuck, played by Cory Michael Smith.

Reconnecting with him stirs up old feelings and reminds her of a more carefree chapter of her life. To make things even more complicated, Chuck suddenly seems ready to embrace the family life he once avoided.

The official synopsis reads: "A charming take on the love triangle." Wendy believes she's perfectly happy in her relationship, until her older boyfriend, Jack, who is divorced with children, insists they take a break to make sure she's truly okay giving up on the idea of marriage and babies.

“During this time, Wendy unexpectedly runs into her ex, Chuck (Cory Michael Smith), who also reignites her carefree and spontaneous side, and suddenly seems to want a family. The three of them navigate a chaotic, confusing, and often funny relationship triangle, reminding us that the pursuit of love is beautiful and messy all at once.

The trailer gives off an inviting, lived-in feeling that fits Swanberg's style. Fans of his earlier indie work will probably recognize that natural chemistry between the cast and the intimate storytelling he's known for.

It also helps that the beautiful Alaskan setting was captured on 35mm film, giving everything a rich, cinematic look that perfectly complements the emotional journey.

Along with Fanning, Johnson, and Smith, the cast also includes Debby Ryan, Anna Konkle, Lamorne Morris, and Karley Sciortino.

IFC will release The Sun Never Sets in select theaters beginning August 28, 2026.
