New Poster and Story Details Revealed for OPTIMUS PRIME: AWAKENING Animated Short

Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment have revealed new details for Optimus Prime: Awakening, a special 12-minute animated short created as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of The Transformers: The Movie.

The short will play after select anniversary screenings of the 1986 animated classic, which returns to theaters internationally in 4K from September 17 through September 22.

As a huge Transformers fan, and especially a fan of Transformers: The Movie, I think this is really cool. Getting another animated story connected to that world is already enough to get my attention, but the involvement of the late Peter Cullenand Frank Welker makes this something much more special.

Optimus Prime: Awakening has been described as a love letter to the Transformers community as well as to Cullen, the legendary voice actor who brought Optimus Prime to life for more than four decades.

The short builds from the storytelling and visual legacy of the 1986 movie while also looking toward the future of the franchise.

Most importantly, it features Cullen's final original voice performance as Optimus Prime. Cullen viewed his return for Optimus Prime: Awakening as a homecoming to the character he helped define across generations.

His performance is said to explore a more vulnerable side of Prime without losing the strength and authority that have always been essential to the Autobot leader.

Welker also returns as Megatron and Soundwave, putting these two legendary performers opposite each other for one final Transformers story. Welker reflected on Cullen, their characters, and what it meant to record the project together:

“Optimus Prime and Megatron were made for each other. After all, one needs the perfect hero against the epitome of evil to create great drama.

“Peter’s portrayal of Prime was born of his own personal beliefs; honesty, loyalty, and always insisting on doing the right thing. This made it easy to be friends.

“ Returning as Megatron and Soundwave for one final story opposite Peter’s Optimus in Optimus Prime: Awakening was a real gift. I will miss my friend, but that voice and his heart and values will always be part of Optimus Prime.”

Knowing this contains Cullen's final original performance as Prime changes the weight of the short considerably. Optimus Prime has had plenty of incarnations over the years, but Cullen's voice became inseparable from the character.

I'm very curious to see what the filmmakers can pull off in 12 minutes. There's a lot of history tied to these characters, especially for fans who grew up watching the original animated series and 1986 movie.

Transformers: The Movie remains one of the most memorable pieces of the franchise, and seeing it restored in 4K on the big screen is already worth getting excited about. Adding Optimus Prime: Awakening to select screenings makes the 40th anniversary event even more interesting.

If this manages to capture some of the personality, energy, and emotion that made the original movie so damn good while giving Cullen's Optimus Prime a fitting final moment, this could be something Transformers fans won't want to miss.
