AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Directors Share Heartfelt Comments About Chris Evans’ Return
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantThe first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday has been released, and it reveals that Chris Evansis officially back as Steve Rogers. After years of rumors, speculation, and denial, Evans is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the filmmakers who helped define the character commented on the characters return.
Evans was last seen as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame, closing the book on Captain America in a wonderful and emotional way. Since then, talk of a comeback never fully went away, but nothing was ever confirmed.
That changed the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer leaked online. The footage shows him riding a motorcycle to Peggy Carter’s house, pausing to look at his Captain America suit, and gently holding a baby. The trailer then cuts to a simple message on screen: “Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday.”
Shortly after the trailer dropped, directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo shared their reaction on Instagram, posting the footage with a caption that made it clear just how much the character still means to them.
“The character that changed our lives,” the Russo Brothers wrote. “The story that brought us all here together. It was always going to come back to this.”
The Russos first entered the MCU with Captain America: Winter Soldier, where Evans helped redefine the character for a modern audience. They followed that up with Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, steering some of Marvel’s most ambitious stories.
Now, after a seven-year break from Marvel, they’re returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
This next chapter is shaping up to be massive. Avengers: Doomsday is a full-blown crossover event that brings together heroes from across Marvel’s past and present. The lineup includes the Fantastic Four, the original X-Men, the New Avengers, and the Avengers themselves.
All of them are set to collide with Doctor Doom, who will be played by Robert Downey Jr. in a surprising and highly anticipated turn.
Steve Rogers’ return is reportedly just the beginning of Marvel’s trailer rollout. This first preview focused solely on him, while later trailers are said to spotlight Thor and Doctor Doom. A fourth trailer is expected to act as a broader teaser packed with multiple characters.
For now, though, the spotlight is on Steve Rogers and his quiet reintroduction. It’s a return to the character that helped shape the MCU and the filmmakers’ own journey through it.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, 2026.
