EVIL DEAD BURN Director Reveals Bruce Campbell’s Biggest Request for the Horror Sequel
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantThe Evil Dead franchise has built its legacy on blood-soaked chaos, relentless Deadites, and unforgettable practical horror. Whether you love the manic energy of Ash Williams or the brutal intensity of the newer films, every entry has managed to leave its own mark.
Next up is Evil Dead Burn, director Sébastien Vaniček’s standalone chapter in the long-running horror saga, and it turns out franchise icon Bruce Campbellhad one important request before production got rolling.
Evil Dead Burn is set to arrive in theaters on July 10, 2026, and while it’s expected to lean heavily into terrifying, ultra-violent horror rather than comedy, fans can rest easy knowing it has the support of both Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi.
Speaking with SFX Magazine, Vaniček explained that he met with Campbell early in the writing process. The actor wasn’t there to dictate the story or push the filmmaker in a particular creative direction. Instead, he simply wanted to make sure the heart of Evil Dead stayed intact.
As Vaniček recalled: “We had some meetings about writing and everything. He was telling me, ‘Please respect this and that because we love this franchise deeply. It’s important to us and it’s important to fans.’ So he was just basically protecting his children. I was like, ‘I’m 100% with you.’”
That feels exactly like the kind of guidance longtime fans would hope for. Campbell wasn’t asking for Ash to return or trying to recreate the past. He simply wanted the new creative team to understand why the franchise has endured for more than four decades and to treat it with the care it deserves.
Campbell has already stepped away from playing Ash Williams in live-action, and he previously declined cameo opportunities in the recent Evil Dead films.
The actor has also shared that he’s living with a treatable but incurable form of cancer, making his involvement with the franchise today more focused on helping shape its future than starring in it.
Vaniček also had nothing but great things to say about working with Campbell, adding: “He’s one of the funniest guys I’ve ever met.”
That’s hardly surprising to anyone who has watched Campbell steal every scene he’s ever appeared in. His personality has always been a huge part of what makes Evil Dead special, even as the series has shifted toward darker and more terrifying stories.
While Campbell helped protect the franchise’s legacy, Raimi served as a mentor throughout the process. According to Vaniček, the filmmaker made himself available whenever advice was needed while also encouraging him to make the movie his own.
He explained: “He understands everything that’s going on in a young director’s mind. He understands the pressure and what the studio is asking. He’s like, ‘Do your thing, have fun, just enjoy every minute.’ And when you have a question or you need him, he’s there.”
Raimi knows exactly what it’s like to create an Evil Dead movie under pressure, so having him in your corner has to be reassuring.
The first trailer for Evil Dead Burn already teased a savage, gore-filled nightmare that looks ready to push the franchise’s reputation for extreme horror even further. Vaniček has cited the hyper-violent films associated with the New French Extremity movement as a major influence, suggesting this entry could deliver some of the most intense sequences the series has seen yet.
From its humble beginnings in 1981, Evil Dead has continued to reinvent itself while staying true to its horror roots. If Campbell’s biggest request was simply to respect what came before, it sounds like Vaniček embraced that mission from day one.
We’ll find out just how terrifying his vision is when Evil Dead Burn slashes its way into theaters on July 10, 2026.
