James Gunn Was Protective of Superman's Dialogue in SUPERGIRL, According to Writer
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantOne of the biggest challenges of building a shared cinematic universe is making sure every iconic character feels consistent from one project to the next.
That responsibility naturally falls on the filmmakers steering the franchise, and when it comes to Superman in the new DC Universe,James Gunn is keeping a close eye on the Man of Steel.
While promoting Supergirl, writer Ana Nogueira opened up about collaborating with Gunn and revealed that he stepped in on a few occasions to make sure Superman's dialogue stayed true to the character.
When asked by Brandon Davis if Gunn was protective of Superman, Nogueira confirmed: "He is protective of Superman. There is like a couple things in other moments where he was like, 'He wouldn't say that to her.' And I was like, 'Okay cool.' But, mostly we had the same idea."
Considering Gunn wrote and directed 2025's Superman, the movie that officially launched the theatrical side of the DCU, it isn't surprising that he'd want to preserve a consistent voice for Kal-El across future films.
Superman only has a brief appearance in Supergirl, but fans won't have to wait long to see him return. His next major role will be in Man of Tomorrow, which is currently filming and is slated for release in 2027.
The story will see Superman entering an uneasy alliance with his greatest enemy, Lex Luthor, as they face the threat of Brainiac.
Supergirl will also play a major role in Man of Tomorrow, and it sounds like the relationship between Kara Zor-El and her famous cousin won't exactly be smooth.
Gunn previously teased: "I do think that this Supergirl is apart because she's not so much like Superman. She's very, very different from her cousin, which puts them at odds, which is a big part of this movie, and then an even bigger part of Man of Tomorrow, which we're filming now,"
That dynamic should give the DCU a fresh angle on the House of El. Rather than presenting Superman and Supergirl as heroes who instantly see eye to eye, it looks like the films will explore their very different personalities and perspectives, setting up an interesting family conflict that could carry across multiple stories.
In Supergirl, Kara Zor-El embarks on a mission to save her loyal companion Krypto after the Superdog is poisoned by the ruthless brigand Krem. Along the way, she's joined by the young Ruthye, who is determined to hunt down the same villain after he slaughtered her family.
Supergirl is now playing in theaters on June 26. Based on everything we've heard so far, the film lays important groundwork for the evolving relationship between Superman and Supergirl before they reunite in Man of Tomorrow.
