Luca Guadagnino Casts Doubt on His AMERICAN PSYCHO Remake With Surprising Update

by · GeekTyrant

It looks like Luca Guadagnino’s planned adaptation of American Psycho might be going nowhere anytime soon. The filmmaker has offered an update on the project, and unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like he’s in any hurry to get it made.

During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Guadagnino was asked about his involvement with the film, and his response wasn't exactly encouraging: “Maybe one day I would do it.”

For a movie that seemed to be making progress, that certainly doesn't sound like a director preparing to get production underway.

The update is surprising considering that things were looking promising just a couple of months ago. Back in August, actor Drew Starkey revealed that he'd read the script for Guadagnino's American Psycho adaptation and described it as “amazing.”

That was an exciting development because Starkey had also been rumored to be in the running to play Patrick Bateman, the wealthy New York investment banker with a disturbing appetite for murder.

With a script apparently in place and a potential leading man being discussed, it seemed like the project was moving in the right direction. Guadagnino's latest comments now make its future a lot less certain.

Of course, this doesn't mean the movie has officially been canceled. Lionsgate hasn't announced that the adaptation is dead, and there's always a chance Guadagnino could return to it down the road. His response just makes it sound like American Psycho isn't a priority for him right now.

Based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho was previously adapted into the 2000 cult classic directed by Mary Harron and starring Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman.

The film follows a successful Manhattan businessman whose obsession with wealth, status, and appearances hides his increasingly violent and murderous behavior. Bale's wonderfully unhinged performance helped turn the movie into a darkly funny horror classic that remains popular more than 25 years later.

That's a pretty tough act to follow, but Guadagnino seemed like an interesting filmmaker to take another crack at Ellis' material. His distinct filmmaking style could have offered a fascinating new interpretation of Bateman and his twisted world.

For now, though, fans hoping to see Guadagnino's take on American Psycho will have to keep their expectations in check. There's still a chance the film could happen, but his latest comments suggest we shouldn't expect to see Patrick Bateman returning to the big screen anytime soon.

Personally, I’m ok with this movie not being remade.
