Marvel Fans Think the SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Trailers Have Revealed the Movie’s First and Last Shots
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantMarvel fans have a new theory about Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and if it turns out to be true, it could make the movie’s story come full circle in a pretty heartbreaking and hopeful way.
With the release of the latest trailer, fans have been combing through every frame looking for clues. One detail that immediately stood out involves Peter Parker’s visits to Aunt May’s grave.
According to some viewers, Marvel may have already shown us both the opening and closing moments of the film.
As one fan pointed out on Reddit: "Peter visits Aunt May's grave twice. I can only assume the rain visit is the first one, and the mellow day visit is the second time he visits. It simply warms my heart."
Another fan expanded on that idea, saying: "They might be the bookends of the movie. The rainy one is the beginning where we see Peter depressed and strung out. The end is when he’s fine and found the balance between Peter and Spidey."
It’s an interesting observation, especially when you compare the two scenes side by side. The first trailer featured Tom Holland’s Peter Parker standing at May’s grave dressed in dark clothing.
The weather is gloomy, and Peter looks emotionally drained. Considering everything he lost at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the imagery makes sense because he’s down in the dumps.
Fans will remember that May died in No Way Home, and Peter made the painful decision to let the world forget who he was. That included his girlfriend MJ, played by Zendaya, and his best friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon. Peter ends up completely alone.
The newest trailer shows Peter returning to May’s grave, but the atmosphere couldn’t be more different. The sun is out, his clothes are brighter, and he appears much more at peace. Whether intentional or not, the contrast between the two scenes feels meaningful.
We already know Brand New Day begins with Peter in a rough place emotionally. With no family, no close friends, and nobody remembering his existence, he has thrown himself entirely into being Spider-Man. Crimefighting has essentially become his life.
That’s why the theory works so well. If the rainy grave scene takes place near the beginning of the movie, it could represent Peter at his lowest point. If the sunny scene comes at the end, it could symbolize his healing process and his ability to finally move forward while still honoring May’s memory.
Of course, Peter’s journey won’t be easy. The latest footage also offered a closer look at some of the strange physical changes happening to him. Holland’s Spider-Man is developing organic webbing, and there’s even a moment where his eyes go completely black.
Naturally, that has sparked plenty of speculation. Some fans believe Peter could be transforming into Man-Spider, while others think a Symbiote-related storyline may be in play. Either way, his emotional state may be connected to whatever transformation is occurring.
Spider-Man stories have often tied Peter’s mental and emotional struggles to his powers, and many fans are already drawing comparisons to Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker dealing with personal turmoil in Spider-Man 2.
Whether this graveyard theory proves accurate remains to be seen, but it would be a pretty effective storytelling choice. Starting the movie with Peter mourning everything he’s lost and ending it with him finding hope again would make for a powerful emotional arc.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31.
