James Gunn Explains Why THE AUTHORITY Was Cancelled and Future Possibility
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantWhen DC Studios unveiled its ambitious new slate back in 2023, one of the more unexpected titles on the list was The Authority. The antihero team, known for their ruthless, ends-justify-the-means philosophy, seemed like a perfect fit for James Gunn, especially given his track record with offbeat ensembles.
Now, the filmmaker and DC Studios co-CEO has finally clarified what happened and why the project has been put on ice.
Originally introduced in 1999 by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch under DC’s Wildstorm imprint, The Authority built its reputation on pushing superhero storytelling into morally gray territory.
These characters don’t play by traditional rules, and that edge made them stand out. It also made the project feel like a natural extension of Gunn’s past work on Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, and Creature Commandos.
At one point, many fans assumed Gunn himself would take the reins, possibly writing and directing the film. That speculation has now been put to rest. Speaking directly to fans, Gunn addressed both the rumors and the project’s current status, saying:
"I would have never had time to do this, and although I know this is a popular theory online, I never had an intention of writing or directing The Authority.
“The script wasn't quite there, but more importantly, it didn't work in terms of the larger DCU, both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe someday. Not soon."
This isn’t a permanent goodbye to the project, but it also isn’t something DC Studios is circling back to anytime soon.
The decision seems to come down to bigger-picture planning. Gunn and his team are building a connected DC Universe, and not every concept fits neatly into that structure.
A massive, high-budget Authority movie would’ve needed to align creatively and financially, and right now, it just doesn’t. With audiences being more selective about what they show up for, taking a gamble on a lesser-known team could’ve been a tough sell.
What’s interesting is that Gunn once had big plans for these characters. When the slate was first announced, he described the team by saying:
"The Authority are a group of superheroes who think the world is broken, and they want to fix it by any means necessary. I think it’s a very different look at superheroes."
He also hinted at their importance in the broader universe, adding: "The Authority will interact with all of our primary DCU characters,"
Those ideas aren’t gone, but they’re clearly on pause.
The shelving of The Authority also reflects a wider shift across DC Studios’ original lineup. Projects like The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, Waller, Paradise Lost, and Booster Gold were all announced with excitement, but several have yet to materialize. Sgt. Rock has also stalled after production delays.
That said, not everything is stuck. Gunn offered a promising update, confirming that Booster Gold "is in development," while Paradise Lost is "in extreme development."
He also noted that he isn’t personally writing Booster Gold or the second season of Creature Commandos, suggesting a broader creative team is stepping in to shape those stories.
For now, The Authority sits in that familiar Hollywood limbo. It’s not dead, but it isn’t coming anytime soon either. And honestly, that might be the smarter move.
DC Studios is still laying the foundation for its new universe, and forcing a risky project into the mix too early could’ve done more harm than good.
Still, the idea of that team eventually showing up and shaking things up in the DCU could be something wild when it eventually does happen.
