Ridley Scott Is Producing a New ALIEN Movie That Will Continue the PROMETHEUS and COVENANT Story
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantRidley Scott is heading back into the Alien universe, and it looks like he's finally getting the chance to continue the story he started with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new Alien movie is officially in development, with Scott producing and Aaron Guzikowski writing the screenplay. Guzikowski previously worked with Scott on HBO Max's sci-fi series Raised by Wolves.
Unfortunately this new film isn't the sequel to Alien: Romulus. Instead, it's connected to Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, which means Scott will revisit some of the unfinished business involving the android David, though, I’m mush more interested in a sequel to Alien: Romulus.
Scott has been talking about returning to that story for a while. During a previous interview, he shared his thoughts on Alien: Romulus, saying the film “was OK.”
He then made it clear that he had his own ideas about where the franchise should go next.
“I think it needs some help,” Scott continued. “So, I’ve gone back in. I’ve already got a footprint for the next Alien. We did Prometheus, and then Alien: Covenant.
“So, I’m picking up where we left off in Covenant with Michael Fassbender, who now thinks he’s Ozymandias.”
Sure, that’s an interesting direction, especially considering where Covenant left things. Michael Fassbender's David had become obsessed with creation and saw himself as something far greater than humanity.
The film ended with him in control of the Covenant ship, carrying thousands of sleeping colonists and human embryos, along with his own terrifying plans for the future.
There was plenty of story left to explore, and Scott clearly hasn't lost interest in seeing where David's twisted ambitions might lead.
Of course, Fassbender isn't officially attached to the new movie at this point. Still, given Scott's comments about continuing the Covenant storyline, it would be surprising if David didn't factor into the story somehow.
Scott's involvement with the franchise's most recent theatrical release, 2024's Alien: Romulus, was a little different. The film was directed by Fede Álvarez, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rodo Sayagues, and Scott served as a producer.
Álvarez previously told the Los Angeles Times that Scott was an important creative voice throughout the process.
“Ridley was always the person I went to in order to show him where things are and to debate with him and to have his blessing and also his criticism and pushback on some things. It was a creative collaboration where we met in the middle.”
Scott, however, described his involvement a little differently, explaining that he wanted to give Álvarez the freedom to make his own movie.
“It is hard work with anybody and their mother giving you advice—the last thing you want at a certain point is advice. … Fede is a surge of energy, and I had to step back and let him do it.”
Now Scott appears ready to take a more active creative role in shaping the franchise's next chapter… again.
There's currently no director attached to the new Alien movie, and plot details haven't been revealed. But with Guzikowski writing and Scott producing, the project has some interesting talent involved.
The prequel films introduced some fascinating ideas about humanity's origins, the Engineers, and David's disturbing experiments, but they also left plenty of questions unanswered.
I know some fans would like a proper continuation of that story, but I didn’t really care for those films. I thought they were mediocre at best.
We'll have to wait and see how everything comes together, but Scott obviously isn't finished playing in the Alien universe. Whenever someone jumps in and tries to do something with the franchise that wasn’t him, he tends to want kick them to the curb and do his own thing, like Neill Bomkamp’s Alien 5.
Would you rather see Scott continue David's story from Alien: Covenant, or are you more interested in another Alien: Romulus movie?
