Gerard Butler Targets the World Cup in High-Stakes Action Thriller THE NEST
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantAction fans, get ready for a stadium-sized thriller. Gerard Butler is gearing up to headline The Nest, a big-budget action movie that drops him into a nightmare scenario at the World Cup, where the stakes couldn’t be higher and the clock never stops ticking.
The film comes from Thunder Road, the production banner behind the John Wick franchise, so you already know the tone is going to lean hard into intense, grounded action.
This time, the story centers on a sniper who suddenly receives a chilling anonymous threat over the radio. From there, everything spirals. He’s forced into a race against time to protect not just his own family, but 70,000 fans packed into one of the biggest sporting events on the planet.
This feels like a throwback to the kind of high-concept action thrillers that audiences enjoy and it’s cool to see something like this making a comeback at a large scale.
The script comes from Aaron Benjamin, who is building a name for himself in the thriller space. His previous work includes The Zone, starring Paula Patton and directed by Wade Eastwood, as well as She Seems Nice, which is currently in development. He also tackled Maverick, a biopic focused on John McCain’s time as a POW, showing he’s comfortable working across both action and character-driven stories.
Black Bear is set to introduce the project to buyers at the Cannes market, where it’s expected to land in the $70-80 million range, putting it firmly in that mid-to-high budget sweet spot for action films that aim to deliver spectacle without going completely overboard.
As for Butler, this kind of role is right in his wheelhouse. He’s spent years proving himself as a reliable action lead with hits like Olympus Has Fallen, Greenland, Den of Thieves, and even starring in the beloved How to Train Your Dragon franchise.
The Nest is currently eyeing a production start in early 2027, with a director still to be announced.
