Steven Spielberg Reflects on Tom Selleck Almost Becoming Indiana Jones Instead of Harrison Ford
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantIt’s impossible to imagine anyone other than Harrison Ford stepping into the role of Indiana Jones. The fedora, the whip, the dry humor, and the globe-trotting adventures have become inseparable from Ford’s performance. But as I’m sure you know, one of Hollywood’s most iconic roles nearly went to someone else.
During a recent appearance on IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson,Steven Spielberg opened up about the casting process for Raiders of the Lost Ark and how he andGeorge Lucasoriginally had their sights set on Tom Selleck.
Before Ford became the face of the franchise, Spielberg and Lucas believed they had already found their Indiana Jones.
“[Selleck] came in, and he read for the part. He was good,” Spielberg recalled. “His test was good. I loved it.”
According to Spielberg, the filmmakers were fully committed to Selleck and even offered him the role. Unfortunately, circumstances outside their control got in the way.
“But there’s where the strings of destiny didn’t cross with Tom. We wanted Tom. We gave Tom the part, and then he had, which we didn’t realize, an outstanding contract with CBS network to do Magnum P.I. …
“When they heard we wanted Tom, they immediately put Magnum P.I. into production, preempting Tom from being in Indiana Jones.”
With Selleck suddenly unavailable, Spielberg and Lucas found themselves back at square one. What seemed like a major setback ended up changing movie history.
The solution came when Lucas showed Spielberg footage from The Empire Strikes Back. Ford was already making a huge impression as Han Solo, and it became clear that he could bring something special to the adventurous archaeologist as well.
Ford went on to turn Indiana Jones into one of cinema’s most beloved characters, starring in five films across more than four decades. The role became one of the defining performances of his career and helped cement the franchise as a pop culture phenomenon.
Selleck, for his part, has always handled the story with plenty of grace. Rather than dwelling on what might have been, he has consistently acknowledged that Ford made the role his own.
In a 1997 interview, Selleck said: “To be honest, I’m a little embarrassed by it all because there is no other Indiana Jones than Harrison Ford. He is indelible in that role. It’s his achievement. I just hope Harrison doesn’t think I’m running around going, ‘I was first choice for Raiders of the Lost Ark.'”
In a 2024 interview with PEOPLE, following the publication of his memoir, Selleck recalled, “When I walked into the room for the audition, it was just those two guys: Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. I didn’t feel particularly nervous.”
It's fascinating to think how close audiences came to seeing a completely different version of Indiana Jones. Selleck certainly had the charm, charisma, and screen presence to make the character his own, but sometimes things fall into place in unexpected ways.
What started as a frustrating scheduling conflict ultimately led to Harrison Ford stepping into the role, and the result was one of the most iconic casting decisions Hollywood has ever seen. It's one of those rare cases where everything worked out exactly the way it was supposed to.
